Angela Hirbe

Angela Hirbe is an oncologist and cancer researcher. Her research focuses on using genetic information from sarcomas to understand their development.[1]

She is currently an assistant professor of medicine in the division of oncology at Washington University School of Medicine.[2] She is also the director of the Adult Neurofibromatosis Clinical Program at WUSM.[3]

Early Life and Education

In 2001, Hirbe graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis. In 2009, she graduated from the M.D./Ph.D program at Washington University in St. Louis.[2]

She completed her residency in 2011 and a fellowship in oncology in 2015 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.[2]

Career and Research

Hirbe is currently a practicing oncologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.[4] She specializes in treating patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas and other tumors, as well as patients with cancer predisposition syndromes including Neurofibromatosis, Li Fraumeni, and Retinoblastoma.

In 2016, Hirbe established her career as an independent researcher. Her lab focuses on using cell culture models, patient samples, and patient-derived xenografts to understand the progression of sarcomas.[5] She also focuses on identifying potential biomarkers or therapeutic targets for the treatment of sarcomas.[3]

In 2016, she was recognized by the Sarcoma Alliance for Research through Collaboration for her research titled "βIII-spectrin as a biomarker and therapeutic target for Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors."[6]
