Angelia Poon (Poon Mui Cheng Angelia) is an educator, academic and literary scholar from Singapore.

Biography

Poon was a student at Victoria Junior College, Singapore (1987-88).[1] She read English for her undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, graduating with honours. Upon her return to Singapore, she taught A-level General Paper and English Literature at Victoria Junior College. She then pursued a Joint MA in English and Women's Studies, Brandeis University, where she also completed her PhD.

Poon is Associate Professor of English Language and Literature at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. She was Head of the English Language and Literature Academic Group, from 2015 to 2018.

Scholarship

Poon is a prominent scholar of Singapore literature in English. She is the author of numerous books and research articles, as well as educational resources on teaching literature in English.

She began her career as a scholar of Victorian literature and postcolonial writing, and her scholarly work to date continues her early interest in cultural performance and the construction of identities. Her first monograph, Enacting Englishness in the Victorian Period, examines how British colonial authority in the nineteenth century was predicated on its being rendered in ways that were recognizably 'English'.[2] Subsequently, she has co-authored a book on gender in contemporary literature.[3]

Contributions to the study of Singapore literature

Together with Shirley Geok-lin Lim and Philip Holden, Poon wrote the first comprehensive survey of literature in Singapore. Titled Writing Singapore: An Historical Anthology of Singapore Literature, it presents an overview of literature from pre-independence years to recent trends after 1990.[4] More recently, she co-authored a book that furthers the study of recent Singapore writing in a global and contemporary moment, Singapore Literature and Culture: Current Directions in Local and Global Contexts.[5]

Alongside these scholarly publications, Poon has continued to curate and edit anthologies that add to the canon of Singapore literature. These include popular poetry anthologies for young people, Little Things and Poetry Moves.[6][7]
