Angie Gray is an American actor [1] and multi-disciplinary artist, known for her work in the films “Matador” and “The Law of Desire” directed by Academy Award winner Pedro Almodovar, and “Duck Dance” (El Baile del Pato) which garnered her great reviews [2] and “The Milky Life” in which she starred alongside Marianne Sagebrecht and Mickey Rooney.[3]
Coming from a family of scientists, passionate about Art, Gray used to draw and paint since early childhood. After high school, she graduated from the University of California, Irvine[4][5] where she studied Art under Craig Kauffman, Tony Delap and Ed Bereal,
earning her Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art.[6][7] While at UC Irvine, she also participated in the theater and dance programs. After graduation, she moved to NYC.
Although originally starting her professional life as an art director, work with photographers led to modeling[8] jobs. In Europe, Angie enjoyed success as a model [9][10] in German and Spanish magazines mostly, catching the eye of director Pedro Almodovar who invited her to participate in his movie Matador [11], starring Antonio Banderas and the following year in The Law of Desire. At that time, Madrid was becoming culturally very energized especially in its music, fashion and art scene. Angie immersed herself in this postmodern world, making friends with some of the leading figures of “La Movida” de Madrid.
Ms. Gray has exhibited in Los Angeles[12], NY and most recently several European exhibitions [13] most remarkably in 2017 a solo show at the Autonomous University of Madrid "Climate Change: West Coast Expressionism"[14][15] a series of large colourful abstract canvases [16] where she brings attention to Environmental concerns: floods, the melting of the poles, desertification etc [17][18] The show Ceci n’est pas un pays (2018) in Toulouse, France.[19]
These works are executed mixing different techniques, including found objects and we can highlight the presence of signs, that invite the audience to explore beyond the surface.[19] in the first one and found images.
She has also curated several shows in Madrid.
Angie Gray presently has residences in both Madrid and Los Angeles.
