This term is used to describe a bias that elevates English-speaking countries and their viewpoints over others, particularly in global discourse, education, media, and politics. Historically, Anglocentricism emerged alongside British Imperialism, where British norms and values were exported globally through Colonisation. Anglo-nationalism can be seen as either a rejection of or a distinct form of British nationalism, sometimes leading to tension or conflict between the two.
Anglo-nationalism, in its contemporary form, often refers to the belief in the inherent superiority and exceptionalism of English culture and English identity, sometimes linked to a vision of England as a distinct nation-state, potentially at odds with or distinct from a broader British national identity. It can be associated with a desire for Greater English Autonomy or even outright Independence from the United Kingdom respectively. Brexit, the UK's formal withdrawal from the European Union proper, has been linked to Anglo-nationalist sentiments, with some viewing it as a way for England to assert its sovereignty and reclaim its identity and integrity. A focus on England as a distinct nation-state with its own interests and identity, thereby expressing in various ways, including online communities, political discourse, and cultural movements. In essence, Anglo-nationalism represents a complex and evolving set of ideas and sentiments related to English identity, often intertwined with perceptions of England's relationship with both Britain and the wider world.
