Animistic Beliefs is an underground contemporary technoband from Rotterdam that came to fruition in 2015. The duo consist of Linh Luu and Marvin Lalihatu.
Biography[edit]
Animistic Beliefs was first seen in 2015 in the Rotterdam underground clubscene. The duo played at experimental musicnights at WORM and technoparties in club Transportbedrijf. In 2017 Animistic Beliefs won the SENA Grote Prijs van Rotterdam in the category 'Electronics',[1] later that year the duo also won the Rotterdam Music Awards for most promising act.[2]
Animistic Beliefs released their first EP in 2018 on German label Solar One Music.[3] In October of the same year, the duo gave a seminar in collaboration with Novation during the Amsterdam Dance Event.[4] The group also revealed on Instagram that they had been invited to play at a secret rave organised by Italian fashion house Gucci.[5]
In 2019 the duo released a cassette tape under the name 'Audisport 8' in collaboration with fellow Dutch electronic musician Legowelt. Online music broadcasting platform Boiler Room premiered a documentary about the making of this tape.[6] The duo also released their second EP "Molucca Quake" on London based label Cultivated Electronics.[7]
Music[edit]
Animistic Beliefs' music has a strong focus on electro rhythms, analogue percussion and tight sequencing. The artists use a great variety of different analogue synths and a few digital synths in their production, as well as analogue and digital drum machines and samplers. They have also made extensive use of the computer-based DAW Ableton as a means of controlling those synths and processing their synthesised sounds. The group's sound is heavily influenced by electro and IDM from the 90's, but also draws its influences from contemporary music. The music also seems to be inspired by the Westcoast Sound of Holland, a local Dutch technoscene from The Hague and Rotterdam.[8]
A fair share of Animistic Beliefs' tracks contain a unique fusion of club-friendly rhythmical elements, melancholic harmonies and melodic elements, often in the form of mysterious, pitch-shifted voices. A recurring theme in Animistic Beliefs’ work is the use of timbres that refer to the more gloomy works of Kraftwerk and the alienating synths sounds of Aphex Twin.
The live-sets of the group are known for incorporating vintage drum machines, analogue and modular synthesizers and the absence of laptops and computers. The duo improvises their shows, creating a vast majority of the songs on the spot.
