Early Life[edit]

Chakrabarti was born in the Shyambazar area of Calcutta, now known as Kolkata, India, in 1973. His family descends from Bengalis who originated in Kannauj and includes notable Indian freedom fighters, revolutionaries, and professors. Chakrabarti's paternal great grandfather was Hari Chakrabarti whose elder brother was Panchanan Chakraborty, a contemporary of Subhas Chandra Bose who fought against British rule of India.

Chakrabarti's father, Dr. Asim Chakrabarti, had a long career as an author, playwright, and professor at Scottish Church College and Voice of America. He met Chakrabarti's mother, Purabi Banerjee, in college, and they married in Kolkata in 1970. Chakrabarti has one sibling, a younger brother Aniruddha Chakrabarti, who is now a banker based in New York City.

Education[edit]

Growing up in Calcutta, Chakrabarti attended St Thomas School, one of the oldest schools in India. At the age of 10, Chakrabarti's family moved to the United States but returned to India after a few years. The family eventually immigrated to the United States in the late 1980s. Chakrabarti attended Falls Church High School, George Mason University (BS), and Harvard Business School (PMD). In 2015, George Mason University gave Chakrabarti a "Prominent Patriot" award [1] in recognition for his distinguished career as a university alumnus.

Career[edit]

Chakrabarti began his career during the mid 1990s at PricewaterhouseCoopers where he worked as a consultant primarily focused on software development. In the late 1990s, he shifted to product management organization at Siebel Systems. It was at Siebel Systems that Chakrabarti developed a passion for creating software products and met his like-minded, future business partners, Richard Mendis and Rakesh Rao. Chakrabarti, Mendis, and Rao founded Clear Standards in 2007, and this company became the market leader for measuring energy and carbon footprint for enterprise businesses.[2] [3] [4] In 2009, SAP acquired Clear Standards,[5] [6] [7] and Chakrabarti, as Global Vice President and General Manager, contributed to projects like The Carbon Disclosure Project.[8] Chakrabarti went on to work in the office of the chief technology officer, which was run by Vishal Sikka who later became CEO of Infosys. In 2012, Chakrabarti, Mendis, and Rao founded AnyPresence, Inc.,[9] an enterprise mobile backend as a service platform,[10] which was later acquired by a New Enterprise Associates portfolio company. Chakrabarti, Mendis, and Rao then founded Nanoscale, Inc., a microservices development platform, which was acquired by TIBCO Software Inc.[11].

Personal Life[edit]

Chakrabarti married Rita Singh Chakrabarti [12] in 1997, a systems engineering graduate and classmate from George Mason University who is now a senior technology executive in the Washington, D.C., area. They have two children, a daughter, Ria, and a son, Armaan.

Chakrabarti is a devoted follower of the poems of Rabindranath Tagore and pursues knowledge of quantum mechanics, quantum computing, and the philosophy of quantum physics and its relationship to the understanding of God.
