Anjan puisto is a private arboretum in established in 1968. It is located in Honkalahti, Mikkeli on Anjanpuistontie, about 9 kilometers southeast from Mikkeli, towards Anttola.[1]

History[edit]

The park was founded by Anja Laaksonen, who planted the first oaks, lindens and perennial plants in 1968. Located on hilly, south-leading terrain on an isthmus between the lakes Ala-Säynätjärvi and Iso-Palvanen, the arboretum has been expanded over the years with numerous trees and perennials, ponds with fountains, and extraordinary natural rocks found on the site.[1][2][3]

Landscape features[edit]

Anjan Puisto has an area of 7 hectares (17 acres). The current goal is to plant and grow a variety of fruit trees and more perennials in addition to the current ones, and to plant more novelties and specialties of the tree world. The numerous ponds of the arboretum have different aquatic plants growing in them. A wide variety of animals, including peacocks, geese, musk ducks and guineafowls, live in the arboretum. Anjan Puisto is a popular destination for tourists from around the world during summer.[1][2]

Anjan Puisto is home to, among others, the following tree species: Picea: blue spruce (Picea pungens 'Glauca'), variants of Norway spruce (Picea abies, Picea abies f. aurea, Picea abies f. virgata, Picea abies f. globosa, Picea abies f. pendula), black spruce (Picea mariana), Serbian spruce (Picea omorika), Siberian fir (Abies Sibirica) Pinus: blackjack pine (Pinus ponderosa), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris f. virgata, Pinus sylvestris fasticiata), Swiss pine (Pinus cembra subsp. sibirica) Betula: variants of white birch (Betula pubescens f. aurea, Betula pubescens f. rubra, Betula pubescens subsp. czerepanovii), variants of silver birch (Betula pendula ’Youngii’, Betula pendula f. bircalensis, Betula pendula Dalecarlica, Betula pendula var. carelica) Phellodendron: cork tree (Phellodendron spp.) Alnus: grey alder (Alnus incana f. laciniata) Populus: Eurasian aspen (Populus tremula 'Erecta'), Ulmus: Exeter Elm (Ulmus glabra Exoniensis).
