Anjilla Areezo is an Afghan Human Rights Defender and media spokesperson known for her work supporting journalists and migrant-women at risk and promoting their access and participation during the Afghan peace process.

Biography

Anjilla Areezo is an Afghan Human Rights Defender who sought refuge[1] in Ireland following the 2021 Taliban offensive.

Before being forced to leaving Afghanistan, Areezo worked with the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee, a non governmental organisation supporting journalists facing violence, intimidation, and death threats. Areezo routinely appeared on broadcast media, discussing the safety of journalists, advocating for their right to participate and inform the public of proceedings of the Intra Afghan Talks.[2]

The day after the Fall of Kabul (2021), Areezo was offered a visa to leave the country through the Irish-led NGO Front Line Defenders.

Work

As a media spokesperson, Areezo regualrly appeared in Afghan media including the Wolesi Jirga’s morning programme[3] and Rah-e-Farda.[4]

Areezo is regularly called upon by the United Nations to give evidence and expert consultation on the rights of migrant women and has participated in events at the Human Rights Council[5] and UN Treaty Bodies[6] .

Currently, Areezo is a member of the Global Strategic Advisory Board on Gender and Migration[7] hosted by the human rights organisation Border Violence Monitoring NetworkCite error: Invalid <ref> tag; refs with no name must have content.
