Ankur Rathee (born 24 March 1991)[1] is an Indian-American actor and dancer known for his feature films, web series, and theater productions. He is best known for his roles in the Amazon Prime series Four More Shots Please! , Made in Heaven directed by Zoya Akhtar, and in the Hindi film The Tashkent Files opposite Naseeruddin Shah..[2] In 2013 he was a Dance India Dance finalist.[3]
Early Life
Ankur was born in Hisar, Haryana and is fluent in Hindi, Haryanvi, and English[2]. His parents are small business owners and he also has a sister, Sonia, who is based in New York.[4][1]
He studied Anthropology at Princeton University and graduated in 2014.[5][6] His first experience with acting started with Mira Nair in a short film shot in Uganda.[7][8]
Before working as an actor, Ankur worked as a consultant for AppNexus. In 2015 he quit his job to act full-time.[5]
Career
Early Years
Ankur was dancing on stage from the age of 8 in styles including Bollywood, hip-hop, contemporary, jazz, and acrobatic adage.[7] Ankur discovered his passion for singing and acting in his teens through musical theater.[2] As a student he acted in many musicals like Fiddler on the Roof[7], Good Person of Szechuan,[9] and Chicago.[10]
At Princeton University, Ankur took many courses in the performing arts pertaining to scene study, advanced acting, directing, and screenwriting. Outside the classroom he acted in plays, danced and choreographed for two dance companies, and sang with two a capella groups.[11][2] At USC School of Cinematic Arts he wrote and directed his first short film Fatherhood[12] in Los Angeles on 16mm film.[5]
On Stage
Ankur’s first professional theater experience was as “Jade Emperor" in the martial arts opera Journey Beyond the West (2014) at the McCarter Theatre, for which he trained in WuShu (kung fu).[13][14] After moving to New York City in 2014, he continued his acting training with Alice Spivak in the Stanislavski Technique while acting in short films and off-Broadway theater.[7] His notable performances include an Iraqi soldier during the Iraq War in Between the Tigris and the Euphrates (2015)[15] and an 11th century Cordoba poet in My Heart is in the East (2015) at the historic La MaMa Theatre.[16][17] That year he also directed a play at the Manhattan Repertory Theater[11] and became a dance faculty member at Steps on Broadway[18][19].
In 2018 he found his way back to the stage alongside Ila Arun and K. K. Raina as the lead in Tammy Ryan's Baby's Blues, a play about postpartem depression.[20] It premiered at the National Centre for the Performing Arts and has been touring India since.[21]
On camera
In 2013 he became a Dance India Dance finalist[3] and the next year played the lead in an NYU Tisch thesis dance film, 100: the Tribute opposite Anuja Joshi[22]. However, the majority of Ankur's on-screen work began when he moved to India in late 2015. By 2017 he had done countless TV commercials[23][24], including ad campaigns with Anushka Sharma[25], Sunny Leone[26][27], Virat Kohli[28], and MS Dhoni[29]. During that time he trained briefly with Atul Mongia[11].
His signed his first two films as a lead in 2017, an independent horror film Night Encounters[30] and the Marathi film Nirmal Enroute[31][32]. The next year he signed on as Arjun Mathur’s love interest in the Amazon Prime series Made in Heaven(2019)[33] and soon after began shooting opposite Kirti Kulhari in the Amazon Prime series Four More Shots Please(2019)[34]. Simultaneously, he was acting with Naseeruddin Shah in his next film The Tashkent Files(2019)[35]
In 2018 he also began shooting for two Applause Entertainment web series, Marry Me Stranger produced by Goldie Behl, in which he acted opposite Anuja Joshi for a second time[36], and Andekhi produced by Siddharth Sengupta[37]. He finished 2018 shooting as Bhagat Singh for the Hollywood film Sarabha: Cry for Freedom[38], directed by Kavi Raz, and another feature film opposite Syra Shahroz and Shahroz Sabzwari[39].
In 2019 he signed on to play a scientist opposite Mona Singh in the ALTBalaji web series Mission Over Mars[40] and began shooting for the second season of Four More Shots Please. He was also featured opposite Nidhhi Agerwal in the Zee music video Unglich Ring Daal De(2019) sung by Jyotica Tangri[41]. Ankur is reported to be shooting for a new Bollywood film and Amazon Prime series in 2019.[2]
