Ann Therriault
Ann Marie Therriault (born December 3, 1965) is a Canadian planetary geologist and policy analyst in the Government of Canada’s natural resources department.[1] Her research on the Sudbury Igneous Complex—a 1.85-billion-year-old, 2.5- to 3-meter-thick igneous rock body in Northern Ontario—furthered understanding of how continental crusts were formed and how meteorites affected the evolution of the Earth’s crust. It has also contributed to understanding of similar geologic formations on other terrestrial planets. [2]
Therriault, a native of Sept-Îles, Quebec, received a bachelor’s degree with honours in geology from the University of Ottawa in 1989, followed by a master’s degree from the University of Houston in 1992 and a PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Ottawa in 2001.[3] Her doctoral thesis, on the “petrogenesis of the Sudbury Igneous Complex,” concluded that the complex is a unique "differentiated impact melt sheet." [4] Much of Therriault’s published research has been carried out with her mentor, Canadian geologist Richard A. F. Grieve—including a 2002 article, “The Sudbury Igneous Complex: a differentiated impact melt sheet” in the journal Economic Geology. [5]
Recognition of her contributions to the field of planetary geology has included Natural Resources Canada’s 2010 Earth Sciences Sector Merit Award. [6] Therriault is set to retire from her Natural Resources Canada position in 2023.
