Ann Tsukamoto
Dr. Ann Tsukamoto (born July 6, 1952 California, United States) is an inventor, scientist and stem cell researcher. She is the co-inventor of a process that allows human stem cells to be isolated. She is a very important person because she has helped invent something that is very vital in cancer research.
Ann Tsukamoto received her undergraduate from University of California, San Diego and later received her Phd from University of California, Los Angeles to obtain her mircobiology degree..[1] She did her post doctorate research with UCSF.While attending UCSF she worked along side Dr. Harold Varmus, together they created a transgenic model for breast cancer [1]
Ann was employed at SyStemix, a biotech company, from 1989-1997 where she was connected with isolation of the Hematopoietic stem cell. [1] In 1998, Ann joined StemCells, Inc. where she became a leader in overseeing the isolation of human liver and neural stem cells to a variety of different diseases. When she joined the company, she was one of the few first world class researchers who were focused on the development and discovery of human stem cells. She has received multiple leadership roles while employed with Stem Cells, Inc.
As explained above, Ann Tsukamoto is the co-patentee of a process that is used to isolate human stem cells. The patent was awarded in 1991[2].The work that she has contributed to has led to major advances in technology, specifically to cancer researcher. She has worked consistently on understanding how the blood systems work in cancer patients. Hopefully, one day these advances will lead to a cure for cancer. Ann has 12 patents including those that are pending as well as those that were already granted.
Ann Tsukamoto continues to use her knowledge to help other researchers find new ways to stop different forms of cancer from spreading. While Tsukamoto is not well known, her contributions have made many impacts on patients as well as women in technology. [3]
