Ann Wang (born 1967) is a Malaysian entrepreneur and hair stylist and Managing Director of Apt Group of Salons and Academy.[1]
Wang is well known for running her chain of salons, APT Salon with about 30 stores all over Malaysia. She is also famed for running hairdressing college in Malaysia.[2]
Early life She was the second child of out five children in her family. She grew up in a poor family and had to work since childhood to support her family. She had to forgo her education so that her siblings can live a better life.
Business Ventures In 1990, from her savings, she started a small hairdressing salon in Kapar, Malaysia named Ami- Q. Although the salon was small, but the business was good.[3] After operating the first salon for five years, she took on a big mortgage to open the second shop. It was risky business decision as the second shop had the rental of 30 times of the first shop. The shop was located in Klang Parade. It was a leap of faith that proves successful.
In 2002, she opens her third store in Berjaya Times Square. The name APT was coined in 2004. APT which was the abbreviated Ann Professional Team puts a great deal on the importance of a team.[4]
From 2005 to 2008, Ann Wang sets a record of opening 33 stores within the span of three years.[5]
In 2013, Wang has expanded her salon operations to Jakarta.[6]
In 2014, Wang had opened up hairdressing salon and college in Phnom Penh.[7]
Education She undertakes advance hairstyling courses from Mr Allan D in United Kingdom and completed her Master of Business Administration (MBA).[8]
Awards Wang won the SME Woman Entrepreneur Award awarded by SME Association of Malaysia. Wang has led her salon to garner Superbrands Malaysia for many years.[9] Her chain of salons has also broken the Malaysian Book of Records as the largest hair salon chain with 43 outlets.[10]
