Anna-Maria Belli
Anna-Maria Belli, MD, FCIRSE is a British interventional radiologist. Belli was the first female president of the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) from 2001 to 2003.[1] and later the first female president of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE) from 2014 to 2015 [2]. Belli has been an advocate for women in interventional radiology[3][4] and a proponent of the role of an interventional radiologist as a clinician.[5]
Training and Career
Belli received her medical degree from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School (London, England) in 1980. She then completed her diagnostic radiology residency and interventional radiology fellowship at St. George’s Hospital (London, England). After completing her fellowship, Belli worked as an honorary consultant radiologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (Sheffield, England), followed by the Hammersmith Hospital (London, England), before returning to St. George’s Hospital where she continued to work until her retirement. She served as a Professor of Interventional Radiology at St. George’s Hospital starting in 2008.[6]
During her career, Belli was a member of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidelines Development Group for heavy menstrual bleeding and served on the committee of safety for devices for Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency from 2000 to 2009.[7]
Research and Editorial Experience
Belli has been involved in research looking at the efficacy of drug eluting balloons for peripheral arterial disease[8] and co-authored the FUME trial, the only randomized control trial comparing abdominal myomectomy and uterine artery embolization[9]. She was also a co-applicant for FEMME, a multicenter randomized control trial looking at myomectomy and uterine artery embolization[10] [11]. and has been involved in numerous other publications regarding uterine artery embolization[12]. She has published over 140 peer reviewed articles and 20 book chapters covering a variety of topics from interventional radiology training to procedures[13] [14] [15]
Belli was an associate editor for Radiology Now, European Radiology, and The British Journal of Radiology. She additionally was an editor for 2 books.
Awards
Belli has been recognized by national and international societies for clinical excellence. Some of her notable awards include the Gold Medal of the BSIR in 2015[16], the Gold Medal of the CIRSE in 2018[17], and the Gold Medal of the European Society of Radiology in 2019[18]. She has additionally received honorary fellowships to the German Society of Interventional Radiology and Minimally Invasive Therapy and the Seldinger Society of Interventional Radiology of Sweden.
