Anna Clendening is an American singer/songwriter from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She is currently signed to Asylum Records. Her most recent single, “Boys Like You (Pop Mix)”, was released on June 1, 2018.

Early life[edit]

Anna Clendening was born and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. At the age of 14, she was diagnosed with anxiety and music became her sense of relief. She began her music career singing covers online[1]. On September 20, 2013 she posted her rendition of “Gas Pedal” by Sage the Gemini on Vine. It soon went viral and she began posting more mini covers on Vine and gained over 2.5 million followers. In 2014, she competed on season 9 of America’s Got Talent, an audition video that also went viral[2].

Following the audition and growing fan base on Vine, Anna took to YouTube to post vlogs and musical cover videos.

Music career[edit]

In 2014, she teamed up with Tyler Ward to release a EP titled 2(two). The EP featured to cover songs, “Photograph” by Ed Sheeran, and “Stay with Me” by Sam Smith. She later worked with Kurt Hugo Schneider and released two more cover singles, “Who You Are” by Jessie J and “One More Time” by Ariana Grande.

Not wanting to be known as a cover artist, she began releasing her own music in 2016. “To My Parents” was the first track to begin establishing her as an artist. In 2017 she released “Boys Like You (Acoustic Version)”, which went viral and landed on YouTube Artist On The Rise playlist and on Pandora's Top Spins Chart for 17 weeks. Anna signed to Asylum Records in December 2017 and a studio version of the song “Boys Like You”, was released in 2018.

With the new mix of “Boys Like You,” Anna began to receive her first Top 40 airplay in her home state of North Carolina, which included a performance on PulseFM’s Back To School Bash 2018[3].

Throughout her growth as an artist over the last few years, Clendening has also continued expanding her social media presence with a YouTube channel and on Instagram, where she often “field-tests” the hooks she’s working on in real time to get feedback from her fans.

Anna gets her music inspiration from Sia and Julia Michaels. Her songs range from acoustic to alternative pop with an edge. She is currently working with Zelda Williams to create visuals for her upcoming EP to be released in 2019.

Mental health awareness[edit]

Anna has been very open about her struggles with anxiety and depression. When she appeared on America’s Got Talent she shared that her anxiety had kept her bedridden for months prior[4]. She also regularly shares her experiences with her own mental health on social media to help break the stigma around mental illness and educate others.[5]
