Anna Holland is a British climate activist. Born in northwest England, they joined Just Stop Oil in June 2022 and met Phoebe Plummer at a Trafalgar Square roadblock in October. Later that month, the pair threw soup at a painting of Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh, prompting worldwide outrage and earning queerphobic abuse. The reaction from their family prompted Holland to retreat from frontline activism. In September 2024, Holland was sentenced to 20 months in prison for their part in the act, prompting criticism.

Life and career

Holland was born in northwest England and has a brother and two sisters. They identify as queer, non-binary, and bisexual.[1] Their mother was the headteacher at a Catholic primary school and their brother trained with the Royal Air Force. Holland first became interested in activism in 2018 due to higher education strikes and started reading poetry at Newcastle University in 2020. While there, they joined Just Stop Oil in June 2022 after attending a recruiting talk on campus and protested the Kingsbury Oil Terminal.[2]

In October 2022, Holland and Phoebe Plummer threw Heinz Tomato Soup at the painting of Sunflowers by Van Gogh at the National Gallery, causing worldwide outrage and queerphobic abuse. They were arrested, charged, and later sentenced to 20 months in prison in September 2024.[3]
