Anna Signorile

Anna Signorile (born 10 June 1962) is an Italian architect with British citizenship. She has been a Member of the RIBA for several years.

Early life and education

Signorile was born in Bari into a large family comprising her parents, Gaetano Signorile and Caterina Cipriani, two brothers and a sister. After obtaining her Art Diploma (Diploma di Maturita’ Artistica) at the State Art School (Liceo Artistico Statale) in Bari, she enrolled at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Pescara, graduating in 1988 with a thesis in Architectural Composition, supervised by Prof. Arch. Giuseppe Barbieri.

In 1987, while still a student, she became a pupil of Prof. Arch. Benedetta Spadolini at the Department of Technology, for the “Morphology of Components” chair of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Pescara, in the role of “Cultore della Materia” (Subject Matter Expert), where she dealt with the history of design, and with the design and production of furniture components, from small scale to urban furniture.

Signorile attended university lectures and technical seminars, while working on various publications and supervising students undertaking degree theses on large-scale design. At the same time, she collaborated at the Spadolini studio in Florence, in the drafting and development of various residential care homes for the elderly, alongside Spadolini.

During her university collaboration, which ended in 1992, Signorile participated in architecture competitions, scientific research and various publications in the field of architecture and housing issues for the elderly.

Signorile’s studies included projects ranging from urban planning to architecture, environmental protection, interior design and furniture product design, always with special attention to environmental implications.

Career

Signorile began working and collaborating with various architectural practices, acquiring experience in both design and construction site management. Aged 20, she collaborated on the design and execution of the external works for the residential care home for the elderly “Opera Don Guanella” established in Bari, on Via Giulio Petroni, in the 1980s; the building still stands today and remains fully operational.

Over the last ten years of her professional activity, Signorile developed a particular interest in collaboration abroad, especially in England and London. She worked for the company Natuzzi Italia of Sant’Eramo in Colle (BA) in the retail sector, dealing with the design of private interior spaces for the furnishing of luxury residences located in London and its surrounding areas, incorporating furnishings and accessories designed and manufactured by Natuzzi Italia.

Signorile worked with London-based P.O.V. Ltd on the renovation of residential properties, from administrative organisation to the preparation and scheduling of construction sites, as well as with the company Gruppo International Montaggi Srl of Como for the installation of display windows in shopping centres such as Harrods and Selfridges in London.

In Italy, Signorile worked in various fields, from restoration to the conservative restoration of religious buildings and important historic private residences. She also worked on numerous private houses, dealing with construction-site management and interior design, as well as shop fittings and other sectors.

Signorile designed green spaces in both private and public contexts. She created roof gardens and worked on the protection of green areas for environmental conservation in extra-urban contexts, such as the Gravine di Palagianello Park (TA), between 1996 and 1999, being responsible for the management of two construction projects – “Creation of an equipped natural park and establishment of a botanical garden” and “Recovery of an area of the historic centre with the creation of a terraced landscape route”.

Between 1998 and 2001, she was elected a member of the Building Commission of the Municipality of Triggiano representing the Superintendency for Environmental, Architectural, Artistic and Historical Heritage, in the role of Technical Commissioner in matters relating to artistic and historical heritage – Municipal Council Resolution No. 3 of 13/02/1998

Among her collaborations in the residential sector, Signorile participated in the construction of 105 villas in the Villaggio dei Turchesi in Castellaneta Marina (TA) between 2004 and 2008, where she was responsible for construction supervision and relations with clients.

Over the next two years, Signorile worked on the subsidised affordable housing units of residential block 286 in Poggiofranco (BA), taking charge for construction supervision and relations with clients in every detail, from initial choices through to the final handover of the properties.

Signorile worked as Safety Coordinator in the field of construction-site safety, for both private construction sites and for Bari’s I.A.C.P at various residential properties in Bari’s hinterland, during the design and execution phases.

Scientific research and publications

In the course of scientific activities at the University of Pescara, within the Faculty of Architecture, Signorile collaborated on several research projects, including those concerning industrial areas and urban areas within historic centres. Among her significant publications are the following:

1998: “Foggia: functional regeneration of the area behind Via Fujani” Journal: Continuità – Apulian Technical Review – published by the Regional Association of Engineers and Architects of Apulia, 1998/1999 – p. 96. This publication followed on from the creation of two public gardens in Foggia: the "Fujani street Garden/Giardino in via Fujani" and the "Piazza Sacro Cuore Garden/Giardino in Piazza Sacro Cuore".
