Anne-Florence Bitbol (born in 1986 in Paris) is a French biophysicist. She is an assistant professor of Life Sciences Engineering at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) and the head of the Laboratory of Computational Biology and Theoretical Biophysics.[1][2] Her research aims at describing biological phenomena with a quantitative approach using physical concepts, mathematical and computational means.[3] She is particularly interested in protein sequence data and antibiotic resistant evolution.[3]

Early life and education

Bitbol was born in Paris and attended at the local Lycée Henri IV the Classe préparatoire aux grands écoles, which are a two-year preparation for the exams allowing to enter the French top Universities .[4] She was admitted to Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, where she got her Bachelor's degree in Physics with summa cum laude in 2007.[4] and she also earned in 2008 her M1 - 1st year of Master's degree - in Physics with summa cum laude[4] In 2008, she earned her M2 - 2nd year Master's degree - in Physics, Fundamental Concepts of Physics program, Quantum specialty with summa cum laude from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris, Ecole Polytechnique and Universités 6, 7 an 11.[4]

She then pursued her academic career with a PhD in Physics at Paris Diderot University in the Laboratory of Complex Matter and Complex Systems Laboratory under the supervision of Jean-Baptises Fournier between 2009-2012.[4] Her thesis - titled "Statistics and Dynamics of Complex Membranes" explores the statistics and dynamics of different biological membranes.[5]

Career

After her PhD at Paris Diderot University, Bitbol worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton University in the Biophysics Theory Group of the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics between 2012 and 2016.[6] This group is led by Professors Ned Wingreen, William Bialek, and Curtis Callan. There, she held a Cross-Disciplinary Fellowship from the Human Frontier Science Program.

From 2016 to 2020, she worked as a CNRS researcher in the lab Jean Perrin[7] of Sorbonne Université in Paris.[8]

She was appointed at the EPFL as assistant Professor in 2019.[1][2] Since 2020, she has been a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor at EPFL, in the Institute of Bioengineering and the School of Life Sciences. She currently holds an ERC Starting Grant.[9][10]

Research

Her PhD research focused on the theoretical physics of complex biological membranes, in particular on membrane-mediated interactions between proteins embedded in cell membranes,[11][12][13] and on the impact of local chemical heterogeneities on cell membranes.[14]

During her postdoc at Princeton University, she worked on the self-assembly of multi-protein complexes, and on evolution in rugged fitness landscapes. Specifically, she developed a statistical mechanical model for the self-assembly of the enzyme CTP synthetase (CtpS) with Ned Wingreen and Zemer Gitai.[15] She also studied the evolution of subdivided populations on rugged fitness landscapes with David Schwab.[16]

Her research at EPFL focuses on two main topics: sequence-function mapping in proteins.[3] The function of a protein depends notably on its amino-acid sequence which can be modified with random mutations.[17] Using sequence data helps to sequence-function map of proteins and thus to better understand cells and their interactions.[18] Her work aims at predicting protein-protein interactions from protein sequence data[19], and on the physical origin of functional modules of collectively-correlated amino acids.[20]

She also focus on understanding the evolution of antimicrobial resistance using theoretical models.[18] She is investigating how alternations of phases of absence and presence of antimicrobial favor the evolution of resistance, and how mutations can rescue a population doomed for extinction in the context of a gradual deterioration of the environment.[21] In collaboration with Claude Loverdo, she also investigated the impact of antibody-driven crosslinking of bacteria in the gut on the spread of antibiotic resistance.[22]

Her group is broadly interested in understanding biological phenomena in a quantitative way, through physical concepts and mathematical and computational tools. In particular, they investigate the relative impacts of optimization and historical contingency in biological evolution. While this question has a long history in biology, quantitative approaches can now bring crucial insights to it and shed light on data from novel experiments. Her research spans multiple scales, from biomolecules to microbial populations, with specific interests in understanding the sequence-function mapping in proteins, and in building quantitative models of evolution in microbial populations. They perform analytical work, numerical simulations and data analysis, and we enjoy collaborating with experimentalists.[23][24]

Distinctions

Her thesis received the PhD Thesis Prize of the Chancellery of the Universities of Paris in 2013, which is the Louis Forest Solemn Prize in Life Sciences.[4] In 2014, she received the Michelin Young Researcher Prize of the French Physical Society from the 2012 edition.[4]
