Anne Fairfax Ellett also known as Anne Fairfax (born March 30, 1954) is an American architect, preservationist, and educator devoted to the development of classical architecture in America. She is a founding member of the Institute of Classical Architecture[1] and also later served as chairman.[2] She is a member of the INTBAU College of Traditional Practitioners (ICTP)[3] under the patronage of King Charles. Fairfax is currently commissioner of both the Landmarks Preservation Commission in Palm Beach, Florida [4] and the Lake Worth Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, Florida.[5]
Early life and education[edit]
Fairfax was born in Sapporo, Japan, where her father, Colonel Charles Crittenden Ellett[6], a Legion of Merit[7] recipient, was stationed. She received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree from the University of Virginia (1985) and her Master's Degree in Sustainable Urban Development from Oxford University (2019).
Career[edit]
In 1986, Anne Fairfax designed the book Hawaii Recalls[8] and in 1989 designed the book Hawaii Goes to War: Life in Hawaii from Pearl Harbor to Peace.[9] In 1990, she illustrated the book, Hawaiian Design: Strategies for Energy Efficient Architecture.[10] In 1991, Fairfax worked for architect Juan Pablo Molyneux.[6] She and her husband Richard Sammons founded Fairfax & Sammons Architects Inc. P.C. in New York City (1991) and later Fairfax, Sammons & Partners LLC in Palm Beach, FL (2004). From 1996 to 2004, the New York City office served as headquarters for the non-profit organization Classical America, headed by the American architecture critic Henry Hope Reed Jr.[11] and Arthur Ross (philanthropist). Fairfax was an instructor at The Prince of Wales's Institute of Architecture American Summer Program (1996) and for the inaugural summer program of The Institute for the Study of Classical Architecture (1992). In 2007, The NY Times featured 'Fairfax's sketch of a carriage house designed by John Russell Pope in 1919. The article highlights 'Fairfax and her husband, Richard Sammons, classicist approach to architecture and their renovation of Sarah Jessica Parker's Greenwich Village townhouse.[12]
Notable contributions[edit]
Fairfax was a curator for the Derrière Guard exhibition of contemporary classical architecture (October 2007).[13] With Elizabeth Meredith Dowling,[14] Fairfax co-curated the exhibition, "New Classicism," based on the book of the same name[15] and was displayed at the Venice Biennale of Architecture (2006).[16] She was a participant in the Coudert Institute Round Table on Architecture, with Richard Sammons, Paul Goldberger, Vladimir Kagan, and John Loring as a moderator in Palm Beach, Florida (Winter, 2010).[17] She spearheaded a visioning project for an urban quarter, Marion Square, in Charleston, South Carolina, which won a 2008 CNU Charter Award for best Urban Design[18]. The neighborhood regeneration project Sant Julià de Lòria, Andorra in the Pyrenees, was presented at the 14th Annual US/ICOMOS International Symposium, Washington DC (June 2011)[19] and at INTBAU Conference in Vicenza The Stones of Vicenza: Study Tour (May 2017). It also won a 2010 CNU Charter Award for Best of Small Town Modernization. Fairfax and her firm's participation in the Richard H. Driehaus Concurso de Arquitectura for the regeneration of small Spanish towns garnered awards in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.[20]
