The Anne Frank Video Diary is a Dutch web series filmed by Every Media and published in 2020 and 2021 on YouTube by the Anne Frank House.[1] It depicts Anne Frank's life in hiding based on the fiction that she had used a video camera instead of her famous diary. The series was nominated for a Dutch TV award in 2021.[2]

Content[edit]

The first season covers Frank's life from her thirteenth birthday through her family's time in hiding in the Secret Annex until her family's arrest. As she is reimagined as having received a nameless camera instead of her diary "Kitty" for her birthday, each episode recounts a specific entry in her diary describing that day's events as if she had filmed them live as a vlogger.[3][4][5]

The second season depicts the events from the family's arrest until Frank's death. As she left her camera behind when arrested, this season switches to a different storytelling device where Frank posthumously narrates her experiences as she paces through a white hall.[6]

Cast[edit]

List of episodes[edit]

The first season comprises fifteen episodes published between the trailer's release on March 30, 2020[7] and May 4, 2020. The Anne Frank House announced the second season on July 28, 2021,[8] released the trailer and first episode on August 4,[9] the anniversary of the arrest, followed by the second and third on August 6 and 9, respectively.

Reception[edit]

The Anne Frank Video Diary has received mostly positive reviews, holding a rating of 8.9 at IMDb.

The premise of the series has stirred some controversy. Writing for the Smithsonian magazine, Theresa Machemer describes the controversy as originating from the museum attempting to appeal to a younger generation by "telling history in new ways."[44] She notes the fair share of people critical of the series, with Rich Brownstein of The Jerusalem Post deeming it "jaw-dropping for adults who simply cannot ignore its solicitous premise."[45]

Accolades[edit]

The Anne Frank Video Diary received a Heritage in Motion award in 2022.[46][47]
