Annie K. Powell (born October 20, 1959) is a British scientist and a professor of inorganic chemistry at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. Her research focuses on single-molecule magnets, coordination clusters, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), environmental and sustainable chemistry.

Early life and education

Powell was born in Lincoln, England, the daughter of Stephen and Elisabeth. She attended Mount Street, Westgate, and Yarborough schools in Lincoln. Powell earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in chemistry from the University of Manchester in 1981.[1] She completed her Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry under the supervision of M. J. Ware in 1985, with a thesis entitled Polycarboxylato complexes of iron (III).[1]

Career and research

After receiving her doctorate, Powell worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Freiburg in Germany with Prof. Dr. H. Vahrenkamp from 1986 to 1988.[2] In 1988, she joined the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, as a lecturer. Later, from 1989 to 1999, she worked in different roles as lecturer, senior lecturer, reader, professor of chemistry at the University of East Anglia, Norwich in the UK. Since 1999, she has been a full professor (W3) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (formerly the University of Karlsruhe).

While working at the University of East Anglia, Powell along with her colleague S. Heath synthesized at the time the largest Fe(III) molecule discovered, with 19 iron centres. Further, through the collaboration with  Dante Gatteschi of the University of Florence, the magnetic properties of this molecule were measured, revealing the largest spin ground state so far discovered for a molecular species and in further work also establishing that the system behaves as a single molecule magnet (SMM).[3][4] The application of this Fe19 molecule was further extended to the field of biology, as the structure provides an excellent miniature model for loaded ferritin and iron(III) sources for anaerobic iron-reducing bacteria.[3] Another scientific milestone in her career was the discovery of the first molecule exhibiting a toroidal moment. This non-collinear arrangement of Ising spins in a Dy3 triangular coordination complex marked the beginning of the research area of Single Molecule Toroics (SMTs).[5] The Powell Research Group at KIT is currently engaged in research on molecular magnets, MOFs, biomimetics, coordination compounds and multi functional materials.[6]

Powell has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers and delivered more than 300 presentations at international conferences, universities, and industry events. She has served on the editorial boards of Inorganic Chemistry, Philosophical Transactions A, and currently the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry.[3] Powell regularly reviews for major scientific journals and international funding agencies, and has participated in Habilitation panels at KIT, the Senate Teaching Committee (2007–2011), and numerous Ph.D., Habilitation, and staff promotion committees.[3] Her service includes membership on the UK REF 2014 panel,[7] the advisory panel of the MPI für Bioanorganische Chemie (2009–2013), Dalton Council (1995–1998), and two terms as an elected councilor of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2009–2013, 2018–2022).[3][8] Notable students of Powell include Muralee Murugesu, Wolfgang Schmitt, and Scott Heath, all renowned scientists.

Personal life

Powell married Dr Sharali Malik in 1999. She plays several musical instruments, including the piano, violin, mandolin, viola, drums, piano accordion, French horn, and cornet. In addition to music, her hobbies include birdwatching, badminton, gardening, and woodworking. Powell is also an active member of various charitable organisations.
