Annie Saunders is an American multidisciplinary artist.[1] She was born in San Francisco, California, and raised in Berkeley. Saunders attended Goldsmiths' College (Goldsmiths, University of London) in London, England, for her Bachelor of Arts degree where she graduated in 2006. She graduated from Queen Mary University of London in 2007 with her Master of Arts (MA) degree, and is a dual UK/US citizen.

In 2011, Saunders founded Wilderness, an experimental site-specific theatre company headquartered in Los Angeles.[2] She has partnered with and created projects for ASICS Worldwide, Bulleit Bourbon, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Dos Equis, Hewlitt-Packard, Los Angeles Philharmonic, MasterCard, Onassis Foundation/NEW INC, Opera Omaha, and Santander.[3] Saunders’ work has ranged from experiential installations to performance works for arts institutions and projects staged within abandoned buildings and public spaces.

Saunders’ major works to date include the interactive installation The Home, which received Ars Electronica’s Honorable Mention for Sound Art[4] and the D&AD Yellow Pencil for Spatial Design and Installation Design.[5] The Day Shall Declare It, an immersive work co-created with Sophie Bortolussi that ran from 2012 to 2016, began at the Bush Theatre in London before moving to the disused BBC London Studios and finishing inside a vacant engine shop in the Arts District of Los Angeles.[6][7][8][9]

In 2021, Saunders’ work, CURRENT, a soundwalk situated in Lower Manhattan and co-created with Andrew Schneider and Jackie! Zhou, won Best Immersive Creative Non-fiction Award and the Tribeca X Award at the Tribeca Festival.[10][11] Up In Arms, a collaborative multimedia project with Anna Maria Nabirye comprising social practice, installations, a live-cinema performance and a book, has been developed through residencies internationally and appears in an expansive archival show at the De La Warr Pavilion in 2023.[12][13] Other notable works include Our Country, a touring performance work co-created with Becca Wolff,[14] four site-specific devised theatre projects for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Fluxus Festival, and The Wreck for Opera Omaha, created on location in a disused warehouse in collaboration with Mariana Sadovska and International Contemporary Ensemble.[15] She is also known for her work as a core creative collaborator and performer in Holoscenes by Lars Jan.[16][17]

Saunders is a member of ONX Studio, an accelerator created by the New Museum.[18] In 2021, Saunders was Artist-in-Residence for the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of California, Davis.[5]
