Anonymous Catalonia
Anonymous Catalonia is a group of hacktivists associated with the Anonymous community that made its appearance after the 2017 Referendum on the Independence of Catalonia. Its motto is "We fight for freedom of expression, the independence of the Internet and the networks anonymously. We don't want you to think like us, we just want you to think."
Since 2017, the group has held several accounts on Twitter, closed by the social network one after the other.[1]. Months later decided to leave Twitter and switch to the social network Telegram messaging app, on 15 April 2018, where they concentrated their activity until the last publication on 25 March 2021.
With more than 13,000 publications and 250,000 followers between 2018 and 2021[2], Anonymous Catalonia identified Spanish extreme right groups, collaborated with newspapers to get judges names using anonymity on Twitter to attack the Catalan independence movement[3], hacked Albert Rivera's WhatsApp account[4], or even hacked the emails of judges from the Spanish Supreme Court such as Manuel Marchena[5]
The main activity of the group, which developed a tool using a Telegram bot called TardorCalentaBOT[6][7], was the information minute to minute. Thanks to this tool, they were able to report through their channel, with a margin of seconds; movements, controls and police equipment, charges, arrests or even new calls during large concentrations, demonstrations, road cuts and other events in recent years in Catalonia.
