Anthony Bawn is a writer, director, and film producer. He is known for the film As I Am (2019), and original scripts series, Conframa (2020), and Cheetah in August (2016).[5] He was executive producer, writer, and director for As I Am (2019).[6] Bawn stands with the LGBTQ+ content creators, saying "Let’s create more LGBTQIA characters for use written by us."[7]

Moviemaking[edit]

In his 20s, Bawn found himself "in love with a man before, never even kissed a man. So, he had to gather information and knowledge from his husband’s experiences," he said.[7] After watching Patrik-Ian Polk “Noah’s Arc” series: "I realized there is a space for black queer men to showcase our love on the big screen."[7] The first movie Bawn made was “As I Am”, based loosely on a true story.[8] On promoting the LGBTQ+ community, Bawn says, "There is only one Shonda Rhimes and Barry Jenkins, but we can support our own stories and develop our own narratives writing by us for us we can then better serve our culture."[9]

Bawn considers allies people like Shonda Rhimes, who create "well-rounded, relatable character" — and companies like HereTv, which launched its "Gay Content Creator Incubator" initiative at GLAAD in 2018 to support emerging filmmaker.[9] Another ally is Outfest Los Angeles, he says, an LGBT festival that programmed dozens of black filmmakers projects in 2017.[9]

Bawn has attempted to crowdfund his movies, but without much success. "I feel that these methods require an entirely different team to even remotely get close to what you need. I rely on the old school methods of family and friends or just use my own money."[10] Nonetheless, he says, "I don’t understand why most black gay men don’t want to pay to watch content made for them. This is why we don’t see much material made for us."[10]

Personal life[edit]
