Early life and education[edit]
Chase was born on March 17, 1955, to John S. Chase & Drucie R. Chase.[4] For his early childhood, he grew up in the Third Ward, Houston in Houston, Texas.[5] Chase graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA.[6] After graduation, he was selected as one of the first Stouffer Foundation scholars.[7] He then attended Harvard College, received a law degree from Harvard Law School,[8] and an MBA from Harvard Business School.[9]
Career[edit]
After graduation from college, Chase worked for the investment firms of Rotan Mosley and Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette, advising radio, telecommunications, and broadcast companies.[10] In 1992 Chase founded Chase Radio Partners acquiring KGGR-AM licensed to Dallas, TX. [11] Chase Radio Partners purchased seven more radio stations. [12] In 1998, just six years after its inception, he sold Chase Radio Partners to Clear Channel Communications. [13] One year after the sale of Chase Radio Partners, he partnered with Qualcomm and Leap Wireless International to start a nationwide cell phone service provider, Cricket Wireless. [14] He opened the first Cricket markets in Chattanooga and Nashville, TN. [15] His third business venture was ChaseCom L.P., a company that built and operated call centers in the US and India, which he sold to AT&T Corporation in 2007. [16]
In 2008 Chase departed from telecommunications and started a staffing and recruitment firm, ChaseSource.[17] He is also the principal owner of a Toyota dealership in Memphis, TN. [18]
Chase is a professor of law at the University of Houston Law Center,[19] where he was awarded tenure in 1995. [20] He teaches several courses including Contracts, Entrepreneurship, Communications Law, and Race & American Law. [21]
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Chase is a dedicated philanthropist and has donated $1 Million to the University of Texas in honor of his father.[22] Chase was selected in 2020 to co-chair the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund. [23]
