Anthony James Marks (born April 5, 1998), known professionally as AJ Marks, is an American singer and songwriter. In 2009, at age 10, Marks joined rock band Black Diamonds as the lead singer and the group was later recognized by Guinness World Records as the Youngest Professional Rock Band in the world.[1]

Since joining Black Diamonds, Marks has gone on to release two EPs, Nothing Changes and Out in the Wild, supported pop rock bands Fall Out Boy and Paramore on the Monumentour, and has performed in several countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and Spain.[2][3][4] He has since began recording several songs as a solo artist and launched the podcast American Idiots Abroad.[5][6] Marks released his debut single, "I'm the Worst", on March 15, 2019. He has since released two more singles, "The Switch" and "I Can't Kiss You When I'm Sober".

Biography[edit]

2009–2016: Career with Black Diamonds[edit]

AJ Marks was discovered into Black Diamonds by manager Nancy Burger. Burger had seen AJ perform at his sister's Christmas recital in December 2008, and alongside the band's eventual producer and mentor Mike DeAngelis, offered him the position of lead singer. It wasn't until February 2009 that the members officially started rehearsing together as a band, and by 2010, they had recorded two songs for the studio's compilation record, Rock School - Turn It Up!.[7][8] This achievement would later serve as proof for their eventual Guinness World Record. By 2011, the band had played several stages in the Boston area, such as the Topsfield Fair, the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston, and EarthFest.[7][9][10][11] Within their first two years of formation, the group had also played the German-American Volksfest in Berlin, Germany.[12]

During this time, Marks took up acting and began performing in several local productions and school musicals.[13][14][15]

On June 30, 2014, Black Diamonds opened up for Paramore and Fall Out Boy's tour date in Gilford, New Hampshire, as part of the Monumentour.[4] In April 2015, the band performed at the House of Blues in Boston.[16] In March 2016, the band was presented with their Guinness World Record for Youngest Professional Rock Band at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston.[17][18] Black Diamonds released their first full body of work, an EP titled Nothing Changes, on January 21, 2016. Within the year, their second EP, Out in the Wild, was released on December 23.[2][3]

From 2014–2015, Marks enrolled in Berklee College of Music's summer programs, through which he earned a scholarship to attend the school. [19][6] In 2016, Marks began studying songwriting at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in Liverpool, England.[19]

2017–pres: Solo effort and American Idiots Abroad[edit]

In the summer of 2018, Marks joined Spanish singer Juan Zelada on tour as a backing singer and began to record solo material with 5 Seconds of Summer producer John Delf in Macclesfield.[20][6]

On January 1, 2019, AJ released the first episode of his podcast American Idiots Abroad, which he co-hosts with Megan Sola-Guinto to discuss the cultural differences between the United States and the United Kingdom.[21] The first season featured Disney Channel star Meaghan Martin, Hollyoaks actress Jess Ellis, YouTuber Korean Billy and musician Morris Pleasure as guests. In January 2019, Marks began doing interviews to promote his upcoming single, "I'm the Worst", which he released on March 15, 2019.[19][6] Music Injection described the single as "a catchy and quirky tune with a great beat."[22] Marks has since released two follow up singles, "The Switch" and "I Can't Kiss You When I'm Sober".
