Early Life[edit]
Robbins was raised in a working-class family as Anthony J. Mahavorick. He took on his stepfather's last name when he was a child. When he was younger, he realized he had a gift for public speaking and started reading the writings of motivational authors like Dale Carnegie and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Career[edit]
Early in the 1980s, Robbins started hosting his own seminars, which were known as secular revival meetings. Fire walking was a confidence-boosting exercise in Grinder's curriculum called Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and Robbins started incorporating the activity into his own courses. He gained a following by writing books and later by making audiobooks, television infomercials, DVDs, and smartphone apps (in a well-known stunt, he led Oprah Winfrey through a fire walk). He served as the host of the brief reality TV program Breakthrough with Tony Robbins in 2010.
Later in his career as a motivational speaker, Tony Robbins began to concentrate more on financial achievement and to target wealthy individuals, business owners, and entrepreneurs in particular. His most well-known general event was an annual six-day convention that drew thousands of attendees and cost hundreds of dollars per seat.
Personal Life[edit]
Robbins chose not to attend college and instead got a position managing seminars for Jim Rohn, a motivational speaker. He also received training from John Grinder, a linguist and co-discoverer of "modeling," a method for achieving success by precisely replicating the conscious and unconscious actions of a successful individual.
