Anti-woke
"Anti-wokeism" is an ideology of the political right and center left in North America and Europe. The right presents "woke" causes as existential threats to Western civilization. "Woke" ostensibly describes the excesses of cancel culture and fringe policies such as abolition of the police, but conservatives also apply it to moderate recommendations around health care reform and the Green New Deal in the same pejorative sense they might use "socialism." To protect themselves against charges of "wokeism," an increasing number of liberal and centrist politicians are running "anti-woke" campaigns.[1]
"Anti-woke" rhetoric[edit]
Anti-wokeism portrays "woke" ideology as a threat to the survival of institutions and the social order.[2]
Conservative politicians in the UK have declared a "war on woke." Sir John Hayes, a former Tory official, said that "culture warriors... represent a profound threat to the values which underpin our civilised social order. The battle for Britain has begun."[3] In The Federalist, Carina Benton describes "Woke Christianity" as "the greatest threat to Christians today," arguing that "pseudo-Christian virtues of progress and tolerance" conceal a heresy that rejects the core expectations of "self-denial and sacrifice."
Robert M. Berg, a columnist for the National Review and former Army officer, argued that "woke" policies threaten "the unity and meritocracy that make our armed forces effective" by creating bad incentives around advancement.[4] Building on complaints from Republican politicians that Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Antiracist was on a voluntary reading list for US Navy sailors,[5] Tucker Carlson suggested the military was becoming "feminine," in contrast to the "masculine" military of our principal rival China. Remarking on updates to military hairstyle and uniforms for women, Carlson said, "Pregnant women are going to fight our wars."[6]
In a July 2021 campaign rally, President Donald Trump took the contested position that transgender women enjoy an advantage in sports[7] a step further, saying it would destroy competition: "women’s sports as we know it will die."[8] Trump went on to claim that "wokeism" was behind the US women's soccer team's loss to Sweden in the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo: “Wokeism makes you lose, ruins your mind, and ruins you as a person. You become warped. You become demented.”[9]
Democrats and anti-wokeism[edit]
Democrats in the United States and liberals in Europe have been campaigning against left wing rivals as "anti-woke" candidates.
George Stephanopoulos, the host of ABC's This Week, asked Eric Adams, the 2021 Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, "Is it fair to call you an anti-woke Democrat?" Adams responded by expressing support for policing and affirming the possibility of successful police reform,[10] and throughout the primary, he campaigned in opposition to defunding the police.[11]
