Anton Kappler
Anton Kappler (born 16 August 1979 in Wattwil, Canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland) has served as papal valet since early 2026. Previously, he was a member of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, leaving active service at the rank of lieutenant at the end of January 2026. His appointment as valet represents an unusual personnel decision, as no former guardsman had ever held this position before.[1][2]
Life and Career
Kappler’s military‑administrative career in the Swiss Guard spans twenty‑five years, during which he rose to the rank of officer. His extensive knowledge of Vatican procedures and protocols is considered a key qualification for his new role. Contemporary reports highlight his reputation for reliability, loyalty, and service orientation—qualities regarded as particularly important for a papal valet.[3]
Role, Duties, and Proximity to the Pope
The papal valet belongs to the Pope’s closest personal circle and is responsible for organizing daily life, coordinating appointments, and ensuring discreet procedures. In practice, this entails close physical and organizational proximity to the pontiff, as well as a relationship of trust that goes beyond administrative competence.[4]
Kappler currently shares this role with Piergiorgio Zanetti, a former member of the Vatican Gendarmerie. Observers view this dual arrangement as a transitional solution that ensures continuity while gradually integrating a former guardsman into the position.[5]
The selection of a former Swiss Guard as valet carries symbolic and institutional significance. In Rome, it is interpreted as a sign of special appreciation for the Guard, while also being diplomatically sensitive due to the traditional rivalry between the Swiss Guard and the Vatican Gendarmerie. Keeping Pope Francis’s valet in office for the time being is seen as an attempt to avoid tensions and enable a smooth personnel transition.[6]
Reports indicate that Pope Leo XIV is moving into a renovated apartment in the Apostolic Palace, where close confidants and assistants are also expected to reside.[7]
