Antonio Matić (pronounced [äntǒːnijo mä̌:tit͡ɕ]; born 30 January 2002) is a Croatian footballer who plays for NK Cres.

Club career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Lošinj, Halubjan and Rijeka[edit]

Antonio first played for his hometown side NK Lošinj until 2016 when he transferred to HNK Rijeka's pioneers with whom he soon earned his first trophy in the Slavonia Cup.[1] He earned a second place trophy with the team in the Egon Polić Memorial Tournament[2] and played and scored in the following season of the pioneer league.[3] As a cadet, he was then loaned out to NK Halubjan's team due to Rijeka not having an active team in the cadet league. He went on to play and score a goal in the league[4] and then win the Egon Polić Memorial with Rijeka's cadets in 2018.[5] In his last season with Rijeka, he played the junior league in which he scored a total of five goals.[6]

2019-20 season[edit]

Cres[edit]

Antonio left HNK Rijeka Academy and joined NK Cres on 10 July as the team's first addition for the forthcoming season[7] as a player for both the senior and junior teams.[8] He debuted for the seniors in the first round of the league on 31 August.[9] After an absence, Matić played four games[10][11][12][13] before earning a red card in the next game due to rough play on 12 October[14] and so had to miss out on the following two games.[15] He played the remaining six games of the half-season, mostly full-time as a starter,[16][17][18] once being substituted in[19] and once out.[20]

Parallel to his senior league appearances, Antonio played the junior league for the mixed Cres/Lošinj team and scored six goals.[21] As the second half of the season approached, Matić played a friendly warm-up game,[22] but not long after, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rest of the season was called off, eventually leading to Cres being promoted to the Croatian Third League for the next season.[23]

Personal life[edit]

Antonio was born in Bjelovar in a family of Kosovo Croats[24][25] and soon migrated with them to Mali Lošinj.[26]
