Antonio Peticov (born July 2, 1946.[1]) is a Brazilian painter, designer, sculptor, and engraver. [2]

Self-taught, at the age of twelve he was sure that he wanted to follow the path of the arts; in order to achieve his goal, he sought information in books and magazines.

His artistic training is based on systematic personal research in the history of art and its integration into avant-garde artistic movements in the second half of the 60s.

He specialized in sacred geometry and the Golden ratio, giving his work a strong mathematical character.

In 1967, together with artists Aldir Mendes de Souza and Gilberto Salvador, he founded the group Vanguarda Jovem no Arena participating in several exhibitions. In the same period, he began his involvement with the Tropicália movement]].

In 1970 he moved to London, where he expanded his studies. The following year, he moved to Milan and, in 1986, moved again, this time to New York, only returning to Brazil in 1999.

Throughout his career, his work was spread worldwide through album covers and books, as well as calendars, postcards, and posters, usually associated with his shows.

He specialized in periodic and aperiodic tiling with the largest collection of mathematical games - puzzles - in Brazil.[3]

His production was diverse and follows varied trends of the international artistic avant-garde of recent decades. He made environmental installations and murals in Italy, Switzerland, the United States, and Brazil.

He was president of the cooperative of Visual Artists of Brazil between 2003 and 2007.[4]

He is a member of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America (LCSNA) and is one of the “Friends of Martin Gardner” participating, since 1999, in the Gathering for Gardner.

He founded and directed the Núcleo de Arte Contemporânea (NAC) in São Paulo, between 1999 and 2006.

In 2016, at the age of 70, he opened the Antonio Peticov Institute of Art and Culture.[5]

Since then, he has continued to create various works, including participating in livestreams and audiovisual productions in 2020 and 2021.

Biography

Childhood and Youth

Like so many other immigrants from various parts of the world, the Peticovs came to Brazil in the 1920s in search of security, peace and conditions to thrive. Bulgarians of humble origin, the serious and dedicated farmers crossed the Atlantic with tickets paid for by the Brazilian government who, after abolishing slavery, needed labor in the field.

The family faced the adversities generated by the language, the precarious conditions of the farms, the strange food and the hot climate. But, with a lot of faith and dedication, he was building the future in the strong colors of the Paulista countryside. Their son André married, widowed and became a pastor graduating with a degree in Theology from the Baptist Seminary of Rio de Janeiro, when he met a woman from Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Gláucia Curvacho.

On July 2, 1946, Antonio Peticov was born, in a strategic stop in the city of Assis, in São Paulo, almost bordering Paraná. In the midst of the travels of the evangelizer André, his wife, Gláucia delivered the couple's second child to the world. Throughout his life Antonio witnessed the evangelizing work of his father, preaching the word of God throughout Brazil. At first, in Espírito Santo; then, in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and, again, in São Paulo.

As a result of his incessant curiosity, Antonio was discovering and learning, experiencing different scenarios and assimilating colors, aromas, flavors, sounds and assembling a balanced rational and emotional archive of all this.

It was in 1960, in his early teens, when his father was involved in the Organization of the X Congress of the World Baptist Alliance[6], in Rio de Janeiro, that Antonio discovered his vocation when he met Mauro Salles Júnior, the art director of the Batista publishing house.

When he saw the creativity of the graphic artist materializing in models, mobiles, posters, and other pieces, he realized that his relationship with the world would be through art. His older brother, Walter, the "artist" of the family, got a nice painting kit. With the present came a toy, a mini kit, which was left to the youngest, Antonio.

At the age of 14, he made his first works, which he sold during an event of his parents' religion. It was the beginning of an awakening that, in truth, would become eternal.

Adult Life

In 1969, he went to the MIDEM Festival in Cannes with his friends from the band Os Mutantes - who he helped found, given that he was the manager of the band Six Sided Rockers, the previous band of some of the members - as well as visited London where he was an assistant to his friend and artist Hélio Oiticica in the assembly of his historic exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery.

In the late 60s, influenced by the Beat Generation, Antonio Peticov saw himself as a hippie.

In 1970, at the age of 23, he was arrested for being a pioneer in the dissemination of lysergic acid (L.S.D.) in Brazil, being surprised by police investigators, among them the investigator and torturer Angelino Moliterno, the Russinho, who was part of the so-called “Death Squads”. Conforme a matéria da VICE, According to the matter of VICE, despite being tortured and taken to Carandiru Penitentiary, Antonio was subsequently cleared in what was the first judicial process of this matter in Brazil.

During the 70 days he was at Carandiru, he translated 3books, completed 24 drawings, and 3 paintings, thanks to the art material given to him by his fellow prisoner, Giuseppe Baccaro, a great Italian intellectual, important art merchant, who was arrested for the mere possession of a "joint".

On the program Provocações on TV Cultura, he was interviewed by António Abujamra in 2016 and stated: "A large amount of lysergic acid appeared in my hand, which was perhaps the most important invention of the 20th century, because it was the opportunity to have in my hand, in my pocket, or in my wallet the ticket for the most important trip that a person can have in his life, which is the trip to his interior. I felt obliged to disclose that."

The severity of the prison experience, as well as the strong repression of the military dictatorship, in conjunction with the fact that he was newly married to his first wife Maria Luiza, motivated Antonio to leave for exile in London, still in the year 1970, at the age of 24.

Upon arrival he met Gilberto Gil, and rented a flat near the singer's residence.

He had certainly unique experiences, such as the visit to Radio_Caroline, a remarkable clandestine radio that played rock'n'roll 24 hours a day, without government authorization, or the discovery of the art of M. C. Escher who, as Peticov says in his biography, was a milestone: "This was one of the most important 'meetings' that I remember. Bingo!".

He renovated the Poster Shop on rua Augusta, which opened in 1968, as a way to raise funds to leave Brazil, given the risk of being arrested again. He gathered his money and embarked again for England.

In London, he attended the legendary Isle of Wight Festival, in search of finding friends, and witnessed Jimi Hendrix's last performance in England.

At the end of 1971 he went to visit Milan, where he remained for 14 years, in a period of great learning, forming strong friendships in Italy, a country rich in artistic and cultural heritage, and at the time still curious about new artists.

Antonio was invariably well treated and admired when he said he was a painter (a plastic artist), considering the connection of those people to the arts. He had a relationship with Serena Nozolli, an important Italian feminist, when he began his Jungian studies, traveling around the country, forming solid friendships, in particular Claudio Rocchi, Matteo Guarnaccia, the Camerini brothers (Alberto and Mario), Alberto Salmona, Danilo Marcheselli, Michel Kanah, and others.

In 1985 he moved again, this time to New York City, where he lived until 1999. He was a neighbor of Jean-Michel Basquiat, launched alongside Brooke Shields the poster for the inauguration of the Jacob Javits Convention Center Archived 2021-05-10 at the Wayback Machine, created several of his best known works, was accompanied by his friend and photographer Valdir Cruz, assistant and, later, successful artist Vik Muniz among many other rich experiences and friendships.

He later married Elizabeth dos Santos Peixoto, with whom he had son Pedro Antonio, born in Brazil in 1990. He went back and forth between the United States and Brazil.

He returned to Brazil permanently in 2000, moving to Brooklin in the house he lived in until 2019. He developed his most recent works, among them several canvases and sculptures, series of rereadings. In this place he received children and teachers from several schools in São Paulo curious to know the Instituto de Arte e Cultura Antonio Peticov, where through his collection of puzzles (the largest in Brazil) he tried to break the stereotype that mathematics is something boring and difficult, presenting, first hand, the fantastic world of the arts.

From 2017, Antonio begins his autobiography. In 2020, he participated in a FUNARTE project, presenting as a result "6 Peticov Rereadings: An Exhibition Guided by the Artist", directed by his son Pedro Antonio. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he starts to participate actively in livestreams of varied themes, usually art, mathematics, music, sacred geometry and curiosities.

Installations and Productions

Antonio Peticov has a diversified production that follows varied tendencies of the international artistic avant-garde of the last decades. He has made environmental installations and murals in Italy, Switzerland, the United States, and Brazil. He has also produced audiovisual productions.

Among them:

  • Balli Ballet (1982), Cloudwalk Farm, Connecticut (USA)[7]
  • In 1983, he installed "The Big Ladder" in front of the Coliseum in New York.
  • In Rio de Janeiro, in 1986, the installation "Sete Anéis"[8].
  • In 1988, he delivered the sculpture The Golden Wall (in the form of a large spiral, in honor of the town of Aiuruoca (Minas Gerais)[9]
  • In 1989, presents the Natura Project - Pinheiros River at the 20th São Paulo International Biennial[10]
  • In 1992, the Bosque Natura Project in Rio de Janeiro[11]
  • In November 1990, he gives the city the remarkable mural "Momento Antropofágico com Oswald de Andrade"[12] in the Republica metro station in São Paulo.

Golden Ratio and Sacred Geometry

Having moved to Milan in 1972, Antonio acquired Aldo Montù's 1970 book Φ = 1.61803398875... Appunti ed annotazioni su NATURA E GEOMETRIA - Progressione Aurea e forme pentagonali in a bookshop next to the Museum of Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. This book full of detailed illustrations and graphs, had a great influence on his work. He was also introduced to the Fibonacci Sequence, with whole numbers mirroring the irrational numbers derived from Φ.

In addition, the influence of Martin Gardner, through his constant participation, since 1999, in the meeting of international science and mathematics notables at the "Gathering 4 Gardner" convention, known as G4G (Gathering for Gardner), further deepens the relationships of his work to numbers and geometry in general.

In this vein, one should mention Antonio's complete work regarding the non-periodic tiles, resulting, for example, in the tiles that make up the work "Momento Antropofágico com Oswald de Andrade" of 1990, installed in São Paulo's República metro station - a work full of mathematical references.

A scholar of puzzles, he has a large and varied collection of mathematical objects, puzzles, non-periodic tiles (which he also designs), and paradoxical objects in the largest collection of its kind in Brazil.
