Antonio Posa
Antonio Posa (born December 17, 1933) was a professional Luchador from 1957 to 1970. He is most famously known for taking the National Wrestling Alliance World Championship April 27, 1962 in Mexico City.[1] He was born and raised in the small town of Ejea de Los Caballeros in Zaragoza, Spain.[2] Later in his adult life, Posa settled in Santa Fe, NM where he and his wife Carmen opened a restaurant that later blossomed into a local, thriving tamale empire: El Merendero (Posa's). El Merendero is still run today by Posa's children.
Early Life
Posa was born on December 17, 1933, to Juana Gonzales Casanova and Bernardo Posa Urvòn. Bernardo was a shepard and worked a vineyard in Ejea de Los Caballeros. Antonio was the middle child, between an older brother, Santiago, and a younger sister, Pilar. As a child, Posa was a typical boy enjoying hunting, playing marbles, singing, and being with his friends. Posa worked hard helping his father with the vineyard and shepherding. At 12 years old, Posa saw his first wrestling match in Ejea. This sparked an interest in the sport, and he decided that it would be his dream.
Adulthood
At the age of 21, Posa joined the Spanish military. At that time, it was mandatory for young men to join the military at the age of 21 for a minimum of two years. While he was a cadet, he found a passion for being physical and working out in a gym. This became his new favorite pastime. After he served his time in the military, Posa moved to Barcelona with his aunt, Lucia Garcés. In Barcelona, Posa found a job delivering sodas to stores and restaurants. After work, he would spend his spare time working out at El Barcelonés, a local gym.[3] At age 25, Posa was scheduled for his first match at the El Gran Pride auditorium. This being Posa's first match, he was very nervous. The announcer called him Antonio "baby face" Posa. Posa's first match was victorious and this was the start of his career.
Wrestling Career
While he was in Barcelona, Posa successfully competed in Greco Roman style wrestling, winning the amateur championship. Because of the success of his matches, Posa went professional wrestling internationally in Africa, Germany, England, Italy, France, and later traveled to the Americas. Posa flew from Spain to Colombia. When Posa first arrived in Latin America, he had wanted to wrestle in Mexico; however, Mexican wrestling was a huge sport, and they did not consider Posa a professional wrestler. He decided to build his reputation wrestling in Colombia.
