Antoshka (Cartoon)
Antoshka (Russian: Антошка) is a Soviet-era cartoon created in 1969 with a runtime of 2:26. Due to its widespread distribution, it is now considered an important part of Russian cultural heritage and is still known by children in the 21st century. The film was made by the studio Sojusmultfilm, directed by Leonid Nosyrev based on a scenario by children's book author Eduard Uspensky. The entire shortfilm is accompanied by a song composed by Vladimir Shainsky, which is based on a text by Yuri Entin.
Plot
Antoshka, a red-headed, freckled boy, is relaxing under a large sunflower, eating its seeds. When a group of other children come to collect Antoshka to harvest potatoes, he refuses out of laziness. When he is called down to eat the potatoes that were harvested, his bowl is empty and he falls off his chair in shock.
Distribution
The shortfilm was created as the first episode for a long-running Soviet animated film series called Happy Merry-Go-Round which originally ran from 1969 until 2001. The first collection in the film series had four shortfilms including Distracted Giovanni by Petrov, Mosaic directed by Galina Barinova and Leonid Nosyrev, Antoshka by Nosyrev, and the more popular Well, Just You Wait! by Gennady Sokolsky. The character Antoshka was also featured in two later episodes of the series (No. 2, 1970 and No. 3, 1972). The film was a stepping stone for all four involved to successful careers in Soviet-era cartooning.
