Anusha Gunasekera (අනූෂ ගුණසේකර , அனுஷா குணசேகர; born 21 March 1964) is a notable lawyer and a politician. He was a member of the Moratuwa Municipal Council from 1997 to 2005 and was the leader of the opposition from 2001 to 2005[1]. He served for a period of 17 years as the secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party central organization in Moratuwa until his resignation in 2018 following the local authorities election, although it is not yet accepted, making him still hold that position officially. He is one of the members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Lawyer's Association from 2015. He is a supporter of the incumbent president of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena. He has reached the legislature level of Politics of Sri Lanka.
Early life and education
On 21 March 1964, he was born to Winston H.D.S Gunasekera, a DRO[disambiguation needed] and a lecturer (1924-1984), and Sheila Gunasekera, music teacher (b.1928), in Rawathawatta as their second child and only son. He has an elder sister, Shakunthala Gunarathne (economic advisor in the World Bank). He received his primary education at Prince of Wales' College, Moratuwa and did his O/Levels at the Royal College, Colombo and A/Levels at the Thurstan College. He became a lawyer in 1988, passing out from the Sri Lanka Law College. He is a member of the Moratuwa Sports Club as well.
Career
Law career
After passing out in 1988, he located his office in Galle Road, Moratuwa, and practices in the Moratuwa courts as a civil lawyer while he works in other courts as well, such as Tissamaharama, Kegalle, Negombo, Kalutara, Panadura, Anuradhapura and Mount Lavinia. He is a Justice of Peace (JP) as well and an Attorney at Law.[2] He is also a member of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL).
Political career
He is a long supporter of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and he supports former MP Jeewan Kumaranatunga and his daughter Malsha Kumarathunga. He has a directorship in the Maga Neguma after the Sri Lankan parliamentary election, 2010.[3] He supported Mahinda Rajapaksa in the Sri Lankan presidential election, 2015 but when the incumbent president took over the party's leadership, he is working for Maithripala Sirisena. He has a democratic view towards politics.[4] His political policy is that he always works for the party (UPFA) irrespective of who the leader is. He has also become the secretary of the SLFP Youth Organization in Moratuwa when the chief organizer was G. L. Peiris.[5] He also was a candidate for the Sri Lankan provincial council elections, 2004 in the Western Province, Sri Lanka, and was defeated by a handful of votes, though he received more than 10000 votes from the Moratuwa ward. In 2005, he stepped off from the municipal council but remained in politics.
Personal life
He married Nayana Nonis (born 1973) on 25 January 2001 and they had a son, Dasun Gunasekera, on 7 July 2004. He shifted houses from Idama, Uswaththa and Koralawella to the permanent residence in Panadura. His son is currently schooling at Lyceum International School, Panadura, in Grade 9 while Nayana is a housewife.
