"Any Sport in a Storm" is the 13th episode of the second season of the American animated television series The Owl House, and the 32nd episode overall. In the episode, Golden Guard Hunter tries to prove himself worthy of the Golden Guard sigil by disguising himself as a Hexside Academy student and joining the school's flyer derby team, an in-universe sport. A side plot features main characters Luz Noceda and Amity Blight trying to find out who the author of The Good Witch Azura, the characters' favorite book series.[1]

The episode premiered on the Disney Channel on April 2, 2022 and garnered 316,000 viewers on its premiere.[2]

Plot

Hunter, sewing a sigil to his cloak, receives a letter from Emperor Belos, his uncle, which says that Belos trusts Hunter to keep track of the Coven Heads for the day. When telling the Coven Heads to go to a meeting, most ignore his command, leaving Hunter angry. Hunter goes into a room with Darius, where Darius scolds Hunter for having the sigil on his cloak, saying that it is "impressively bad". An insecure Hunter asks how he can earn back the sigil, and Darius replies that he should go get new recruits for the Emperor's Coven.

Willow is training with Clover, a friend of Willow’s to train herself for a new profound love for a sport; Flyer Derby. On club day, Luz Noceda and Amity Blight start up a book club on their favorite book series, The Good Witch Azura. They ask Willow to join, but to no avail. With her motivation and profound love of the sport, she eventually starts up a Flyer Derby club for the school; to little fanfare. Under threat of dissolution of the club, a professor makes an ultimatum with Willow: if she can put together a team and win a game, then the team can stay a part of Hexside Academy; much to the worry of Willow, who worries that she can't find many decent players.

Hunter eventually decides to go undercover as a spy and join Hexside Academy to try and recruit students to no avail. After accidentally stepping on a giant pigeon palisman, Hunter flies away on a staff. Willow, amazed at Hunter's flying, decides to tie Hunter up in vines and convince him to join her Flyer Derby team. While introducing herself and Gus, a friend of hers, Hunter comes up with a fake name and backstory to get himself out of the situation. Hunter refuses to join, but after Willow hands him a pamphlet with the words "best and brightest" on it, he eventually joins as he thinks that the club could attract the best witches to Hunter's standards.

Three new members (Gus, Viney, and Skara) along with Hunter and Willow join the team. Hunter sees the new three, and is disgusted, claiming that the witches are lousy. However, Willow convinces him to give the aforementioned three a second chance. Hunter walks away, but is then forced to head to the field after Willow ties him up again. The aforementioned three take up a positive attitude and show off their skills to prove to Hunter that they are not what Hunter thinks. It works, as Hunter ashamedly retracts his claims. After a quick call to Darius, the game begins. After a closely-fought match, Hunter is able to score the last point to win the game. The professor begrudgingly allows the team to form, with the team calling themselves the "Emerald Entrails". Hunter thanks the team and proceeds to reveal his true identity as a Golden Guard, to the shock of the team. Coven Scouts proceed to appear, taking in the team as new recruits to the disapproval of the team. The team is taken to a prison, with Hunter claiming that he is the team's friend. However, the other members of the team feel betrayed by his actions. Darius teleports the team to be turned into recruits, as Hunter begs for his cloak and sigil back still to no avail as the team is taken away on Darius' ship. Steve, a Coven Scout himself, tells Hunter about the perils of the training of becoming a Coven Scout, regretting that he had joined the coven. Hunter, riddled with guilt, teleports to inside the ship and, with coordination of the team, sends the ship to the ground, destroying it. The team runs away with their palismans. While initially furious at first, Darius admits he was wrong about Hunter, and allows him to make friends outside of the Emperor's Coven. He gives the sigil back to Hunter.

Earlier, Luz and Amity try to find out who the author of the The Good Witch Azura book series is. The two find out that the supposed author is having a book signing, and the two proceed to go to the event. Luz denies the fact that the author is a witch, claiming that the author is human; Amity thinks otherwise. The two come up with theories on how the book could be available in both realms, including a portal and a claim that the author is Luz's mom. However, when they reach the book shop where the signing is taking place, the event is cancelled. Outside the shop, Amity notices someone who looks like the author and the two give chase to the author. After catching the author, the author reveals themselves as a disguised figure named Tiny Nose. Tiny brings the two into a cave where Tibbles admits that he had found a box of the books on a shore and tried to sell them with no buyers; except Amity. An extremely angered Amity rages at Tibbles and proceeds to strike him. Amity and Luz decide to create a book and writing club around The Good Witch Azura.[1]

Critical reception

Lee Arvoy, a writer for TV Source Magazine, would describe the episode as a "fun episode with lower stakes". He would praise Hunter's and Willow's portrayal for gaining confidence, and for "fun" moments in the episode.[3]

Jade King, writer for TheGamer, would praise the portrayal of Hunter and his progression from becoming a major antagonist of the series to becoming a friend of Willow Park. In an article, she praised the reveal of Hunter having a gritty exterior, but having a warm and sweet heart, saying that while Hunter still wants to play the villain in the series, his prejudices are deconstructed once he finds true love and friendship; something Hunter has desperately wanted in a life that is marred by abuse and force by his uncle, Emperor Belos.[4]
