Early life and education[edit]

Anya Davidson was raised on Prince Edward Island.[1] She moved to Chicago when she was 18 and started playing in a band called the Coughs for six years.[2]

Career[edit]

Anya Davidson's first book, School Spirits, was published in 2013. It tells the story of two friends, Oola and Garf, who are teenagers in high school. They go on many adventures together and navigate many different problems in the 152 page graphic novel.[3] Her second graphic novel, Lovers in the Garden, was published in 2016. This novel follows the story of two hitmen and their assignments and the police that chase after them.[4] Her most recent comic, Band for Life, was published in 2016 and was published on Vice.com [5] Band For Life is about a band, Guntit, and their adventures and squabbles as a band.[6] In 2016, she began playing the guitar and singing in the band Lilac.[7][8]

Style[edit]

Davidson uses a similar color palette in all of her comics. They have bright and unusual colors and characters with abnormal skin colors, such as blue, orange, or green. She hand illustrates all of her pages and outlines everything with a black marker.[9] School Spirits is the only one to use black and white illustrations.[10] Lovers in the Garden uses mixed media, the most recognizable element being the use of crayons.[11]

Themes[edit]

Davidson's comics focus on many different themes. One of her favorites is the power of love.[12] She also uses a lot of female characters in her comics and highlights gender from the female point of view.[13] Another noticeable thing about Davidson's comics is that she completely gets rid of stereotypical gender roles for both males and females.[14]
