Anze Kos (born 11 October 1993, Trbovlje, Slovenia) is a Slovenian basketball player. He is 188 cm tall and plays shooting guard and point guard positions. Throughout his career, he has always excelled as a great long-range shooter. He also has a good vision of the game, which he uses both in the pick & roll/pop game, as well as in transition game. Playmaking ability, including craftiness around the hoop, and a good ball handling technique, gives him loads of versatility in offense. He is also known as an excellent leader not only on, but also off the court, and is therefore often mentioned by coaches as a key part of the recipe for team success.[1]
Playing career[edit]
Beginnings[edit]
Kos started his basketball journey at the age of 12 in Litija. He took his first steps at the Litija Basketball Club[2] under the leadership of Dzemo Ibisa. Transferring to Ljubljana at the age of 14, Anze continued his basketball career at the Basketball Club Pingvini – Ljubljana[3] under the guidance of Timot Vranes, where he, at the age of 18, began to truly show his basketball skills, talent and hard work paying off.
University: United States of America[edit]
In 2012, Anze moved to Sarasota, Florida, where he played for a prep school known as Impact Basketball Academy[4]. With his great performances, he impressed the coach from Webber University[5] in Orlando, Florida, where he also earned his first athletic scholarship and began his university basketball journey. After completing his freshman year, he gained interest from other schools and decided to continue his basketball career at OLLU[6], the University in San Antonio, Texas. Anze played there for the next two years and then completed his studies at the University of Northwestern in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he graduated in the field of Kinesiology and got his first taste of the semi-professional basketball. In the so-called "semi-pro" league, he was selected as the 18th pick in the draft of the Ultimate Hoops[7] league, where he played during his 2016–2017 season.
Europe[edit]
Anze played his first year of his professional career for Cassen Saint-Geours Basket[8] in Dax, France, where he was selected among the best individuals of the league in the 2017–2018 season. The following year he played in Sweden with Lulea Steelers[9] team from a small town in the north of Sweden. Here, Anze showed his qualities with his performances from the very beginning and finished the season among the best scorers and the best passers in the league. For the first time in his career, he also managed to achieve the so-called "triple-double", with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists[10]. After that came the first year of injuries, where Anze consequently changed three clubs in the 2019–2020 season, Dublin Lions[11] from Ireland, Fellbach Flashers[12] from Germany and Club Baloncesto Puerto de Sagunto[13] from Spain, where Anze played only three games before the corona hit. In the following season, in 2020–2021, he played for KOS Celovec[14] in Klagenfurt, Austria, where he once again shined as a long-range shooter, and also finished the season among the top 3pt shooters in the league, after which he returned to Sweden again in 2021–2022, where he played for Ockelbo Basket[15] and Trollhattan BBK[16]. Here, Kos broke a lot of records and, in addition to being selected as the 2021–2022 most valuable player, Anze also set his best scoring record when he knocked down 51 points in a single game.
Personal life[edit]
Anze spent his childhood in a small village above Litija, called Velika Preska. He also speaks Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish and English. Today, in addition to actively playing basketball, he is also building his own life coaching company that specializes in personality development. He really wants to make a positive impact by helping others raise their quality of life. His life mission can also be felt in this. In addition to playing, Anze is also occasionally active as a basketball coach. He also loves chess, tennis, golf and other fun leisure activities.
