Dr. Aodh Quinlivan is an Irish author. He is known for his 2020 book Forgotten Lord Mayor: Donal Óg O’Callaghan 1920–1924.
Life[edit]
As of 2020, Quinlivan was a lecturer in politics in UCC's Department of Government and Politics and was Director of the Centre for Local and Regional Governance in UCC. In a 2014 article in the Irish Times, which began by quoting Robert Flack, he criticised the centralisation of power and the reduction in government at local level.[1] In 2015, in an article the Irish Examiner, he argued in favour of the Cork City boundary.[2][3] In 2019 he claimed that directly elected mayors could be "catalyst" for local government reform, speaking at a Fine Gael meeting. He also described the idea as a "sound concept". His biography of Donal Óg O’Callaghan, published in the centenary year of him taking office, was praised by Lord Mayor of Cork, Joe Kavanagh saying; "During this year of commemorations, it is a privilege to delve into the untold story of the third Lord Mayor of Cork to be elected in 1920, Donal Óg O’Callaghan. Forgotten Lord Mayor gives us a fascinating insight into the story of our city’s former Lord Mayor and the political landscape he navigated during this tumultuous time in Irish history. Aodh has done us a great service by bringing Donal Óg O’Callaghan’s fascinating story to life." [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] It was reported by the Evening Echo in November 2019 that he was writing the book and intended to release it on 4 November 2020, on the 100th anniversary of O’Callaghan's election as Lord Mayor.[11][12]
