Ap Caledfryn

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ap Caledfryn was the pseudonym of Welsh artist William Williams, who was born in Caernarfon on 24th March, 1837. The son of a Congregational minister and poet, he received his artistic education from a much more prominent Welsh artist, Hugh Hughes (1790 - 1863). He married Mary Daniel at Cefn-y-crib, who was herself the daughter of a Congregationalist. Among his acquaintances numbered many famous Welsh artists, including Dr. Joseph Parry, T. H. Thomas (Arlunydd Penygarn) and Owen Morgan (Morien). Although his landscapes were in water colour, he is more widely acknowledged for his portrait pieces, completed as oil on canvas. Arguably his most famous works are a portrait of the nonconformist minister and lecturer Kilsby Jones, and his father, two of which are held at Groes-wen, Caerphilly and the Welsh Folk Museum, Saint Fagans. He passed away in 1915 and is buried at Groes-wen.[1]
