Apertúra

Established more than a decade ago, the journal Apertúra. Film–Visuality–Theory has been published since Fall 2005 as a quarterly online journal. Its primary profile is film studies, but due to its interdisciplinary scope, it regularly includes texts dealing with visual culture in the broader sense. Apertúra plays a unique role in Hungary as a free-access electronic platform combining issues of interdisciplinary scholarship and education, with a particular interest in tertiary education:

1. By making edited sources and materials required for primary research accessible, it is a useful resource for university professors, researchers and students alike.
2. Its dedication to interdisciplinary research follows from the complexity of discourses displayed, which include, apart from film studies, fields and approaches such as visual culture, media theory, performance studies, narratology, theatre studies, psychoanalysis, museum studies, cultural anthropology, postcolonialism, adaptation theory, literary theory, body studies, history of technology, etc.
3. Original studies representing the above fields and disciplines are frequently arranged in thematic issues, including texts heralding new academic approaches or studies introducing new paradigms that are published in Hungarian for the first time.
4. The journal has a broad understanding of culture. It deals with questions of film understood both as high art and as popular art form, but it also relies on the broader concept of visual studies and its diverse media and registers, such as photography, graphic novel, cartoon, animation, opera, experimentalism and the avant-garde. Studies on theatre and literary adaptations are also published regularly, as well as analyses dealing with the combination of media in image and sound, in image and text.
5. The journal makes accessible works of the Hungarian national cultural heritage, as it a) contributes significantly to the academic and critical analysis of both canonized and contemporary works of Hungarian cinema; b) plays a key role in mapping up and disseminating the results of Hungarian film aesthetics and the output of early Hungarian film theory (several of the thematic issues concentrated, for example, on the film theory of Béla Balázs); c.) enhances the international visibility of Hungarian researchers by translating their studies into English.
6. University courses in several institutions have included articles published in Apertúra on lists of compulsory readings.
7. The entire corpus, including previous issues are accessible for all, free of charge.

Published electronically, the journal combines the advantages of the internet (quick and free access, search engines, still and moving images, links) with the quality characteristic of the printed form. The 15-20,000 visitors in a month inspire the editors for continuous improvement and innovation, including the frequent updates of the platform.

Papers submitted are evaluated by an anonymous peer reader and one member of the editorial board. Papers (following the Chicago Style Sheet) are expected in the above mentioned fields.
