Apollo 11 is the name of a NASA mission. It was part of the American Apollo space program, which wanted to put a man on the Moon. Three astronauts (Americans Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins) took part in the mission. They left the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969 and on July 20 at 20:17 UTC their lunar module Eagle landed on the Moon. Six hours later armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon where he said his famous words: "That´s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind." Millions of poeple all ovcer the world watched him on TV. Then Buzz Aldrin, the pilot of the module, joined him. During the next two and a quarter hours they collected 21.5 kg of material, which they later brought back to Earth. While Armstrong and Aldrin were on the Moon, MIcheal Collins stayed in the command module, which was traveling round the Moon. On July 24 the mission ended when the command module landed in the Pacific Ocean with all three astronauts safely on board.
