Apollo Inn is an Australian cocktail bar in Melbourne, Australia.[1][2]

Description[edit]

The bar is described as a 'broodier, cosy space'. It has a capacity of only 28 patrons.[2] It is dimly lit, music played is of the Menahan Street band and other smooth jazz-funk music.[1][2]

The interior is described as black bentwood chairs alongside a timber bar, with a velvet banquet table along the other side of the room.[1] Other aesthetic details include embossed paper coasters, and pleated shades on tiny table lamps.[2] The exterior is described as looking like 'an old office building' with a foyer 'fairly nondescript apart from a pair of stately double doors covered in studded caramel-coloured leather'.[2] Its timber panel walls are inset with vintage watercolour paintings.[2] Emma Breheny of the SMH said 'it all feels a little like you're about to enter a bar in a David Lynch film'.[2]

Most of the food on offer is salty, spicy, and meaty. Seafood is also served, including Sydney rock oysters, Western Australian scallops in orange vinaigrette, and tuna tartare and sobrasada on toast.[1] The Lucian Gaudin cocktail has been noted by professional food writers.[2]

History[edit]

Apollo Inn is a companion venue to the restaurant Gimlet, another venue started by Andrew McConnell as part of the 'Trader House' collective.[1]

Reception[edit]

The venue was rated four out of five stars by the Herald Sun's food writer Kara Monssen, who wrote: "Sexy, smart, sophisticated: Gimlet’s handsome younger brother is saying all the right things in a European accent."[1]
