Appdb

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Looks like you didn't even check references that I submitted. There are not just YouTube and GitHub (that is NOT related to appdb), there are other references in multiple languages (is medium.com, 4pda (which is quite popular for refs on wikipedia (https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=4pda&title=Служебная:Поиск&profile=advanced&fulltext=1&ns0=1&searchToken=2r1pv9ye1p97m0sd3yp8wrlxu) is not enough?). And how does it look like an advertisement, if it does not advertise anything? It even refers to negative options on internet. I have googled for references and there is article about similar service (the article I used as a reference): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppValley which even refers to piracy and contains much less information. Does it look like an advertisement as well? If you are refusing to approve this article, please tell what needs to be fixed. Zond80 (talk) 18:17, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

Added sources as required, totalling 11 refs that meet desired criteria. If something needs to be edited or removed, please let me know. Thank you! Zond80 (talk) 14:12, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

appdb is a community-powered software distribution service for Apple devices. It allows users to download and install apps and serves as an alternative App Store for the iOS, iPadOS and tvOS mobile operating systems. Alongside the ability of users to download applications that are not available on the App Store, including tweaked apps, jailbreak apps, it also allows users to tweak apps by themselves.[1]

App developers that are wanting to share their apps outside an App Store can use appdb to distribute their apps. Appdb has less strict rules for apps and uses post-moderation approach based on users' reports (each app can be reported for malware activity by any user of appdb).

Compared to AltStore[2] or other similar services[3][4], it does not require installation[5] of any additional applications or usage of a computer.

    Legality

Installing apps from alternative sources, known as sideloading, is legal. Appdb is the first sideloading provider which supports official sideloading – with usage of personal Apple developer accounts. In jurisdictional terms, sideloading is testing of applications with your own account on your own device. It does not violate Apple Developer EULA[6]

    History

Developments of appdb (formerly AppAddict)[7] started in 2012 and the first version was released in 2013,[8] including iOS app.[9][10] Since its first release, appdb has switched to an app-less approach with usage of enterprise-grade software distribution technology named Mobile Device Management (MDM) [11], which allows users to install apps just like in the AppStore – with a tap on the "Install" button, without requirement of a computer, directly on users' devices.

Till 2016, appdb had its own Cydia repository[12], but lately it is focused on providing a sideloading experience to non-modified operating systems.

Till 2020, appdb was using an old design, inspired by IMDB[13]. Now it features a modern adaptive design with Dark theme.

    Features

At the moment, the set of appdb features includes the following:

    • App installations from a community-provided library (over 300K of apps)[14]
    • Custom app installations (IPA files)[15]
    • Injection of patches, jailbreak tweaks, dynamic libraries into apps during installation (IPA files)[16]
    • Requesting of DRM-free apps from the AppStore[17]
    • Extension of appdb’s existing library with AltStore repositories[18]

Security researchers can also use appdb to get DRM-free IPA files for their research[19][20]

    Openness

As appdb was set as a community-powered project, it offers free and open APIs for everyone. With such APIs, other people can create software that helps others to distribute and find apps outside an AppStore.[21]

Projects that were built by third parties with usage of appdb APIs include:

    • unofficial iOS client[22]
    • bot to upload IPA files to appdb[23]
    • sample App Store-like app built on top of appdb APIs[24]
    • Rickpactor[25][26][27]
    • IpaSpy[28]
