Aqua Art Miami (also known historically as Aqua Art Fair) is an annual contemporary art fair held in Miami Beach, Florida, during Miami Art Week. It was founded in 2005, and is staged at the Aqua Hotel on Collins Avenue, where galleries exhibit in the hotel’s rooms around a central courtyard.[1][2] In 2012, Art Miami LLC acquired the fair and began operating it as a sister fair to Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami.[3][4]

History

Aqua was founded in 2005 by Jaq Chartier and Dirk Park to provide West Coast–based galleries with visibility during Art Basel Miami Beach and the expanding constellation of satellite fairs.[5] Early editions took place in the Aqua Hotel in South Beach; after experimenting with additional space off-beach, the fair returned to the hotel format by 2010.[6][1]

In December 2012, Art Miami LLC announced it had acquired Aqua, integrating the fair into its portfolio while retaining Aqua’s small-scale, boutique profile.[3]

Format and profile

Aqua is known as a “hotel fair”: galleries install exhibitions in individual guest rooms opening onto a shared courtyard, creating a casual, intimate viewing experience distinct from convention-center fairs.[1][2] Coverage has emphasized its focus on emerging and mid-career artists and its more relaxed atmosphere relative to larger Miami Art Week venues.[2]

Venue and dates

The fair is typically held at the Aqua Hotel, 1530 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, during the first week of December to coincide with Miami Art Week/Art Basel Miami Beach.[2][7] It runs alongside Art Miami and CONTEXT Art Miami as part of the Art Miami group of fairs.[4]
