Aquila Private Game Reserve
Aquila Private Game Reserve is a private wildlife reserve near Touws River in the Western Cape, South Africa. It is marketed as a "Big Five" safari destination and is located about a two-hour drive from Cape Town.[1][2]
The reserve was established in 1999 on land that had previously been used as a sheep farm.[3] By 2024, News24 described Aquila as a 10,000-hectare wildlife conservancy near Touws River.[1]
History
Aquila Private Game Reserve opened in 1999 after the conversion of former farming land into a game reserve.[3] In a 2005 travel feature, City Press described it as a 2,400-hectare private game farm in the Western Cape.[3]
The reserve later expanded its tourism profile as a safari destination for visitors based in Cape Town.[4][2]
Wildlife and conservation
The reserve has been described in independent travel coverage as offering sightings of the Big Five and other wildlife species.[4][2]
Aquila has also received media attention for rhino poaching incidents and related anti-poaching responses. In 2010, Tourism Update reported a close encounter with poachers at the reserve.[5] In 2021, following another rhino-poaching incident, Tourism Update reported that the company said it had previously established the Saving Private Rhino NGO in response to the 2011 attack on rhinos at Aquila.[6]

Aquila is frequently covered in travel media as one of the safari destinations accessible from Cape Town within a day trip or short stay.[4][2]
In 2024, Aquila was part of the launch of Uber Safari, a limited tourism product that transported passengers from Cape Town to the reserve for a one-day game drive.[1]
