The Arabic Manuscript Day (also known as يوم المخطوط العربي in Arabic) is an annual event celebrated on the 4th of April and throughout the following days of the month. The day is officially celebrated by the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts in Cairo, which is affiliated with The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO).[1][2]

Activities and events are organized by institutions and individuals in the Arab member countries, in addition to some Islamic and Western countries.[1][2][3]

These events are aimed at raising awareness about Arabic manuscripts and their texts, which are considered to be one of the largest and richest surviving manuscript cultures.[1]

History

The idea of dedicating a day to celebrate Arabic manuscripts was conceived by Mahmoud Zaki, a Former Expert at the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts, in 2013.[1][4]

Faisal al-Hafian, Former Acting Director of the Institute, and Abdallah Hamad Moharab, Former Director of the ALECSO, sponsored the proposed initiative and assigned the project of organizing the event to the creator in years 2013 and 2014.[1][3][5]

The first event was held in Cairo at Bayt al-Sinnari on 27 May 2013, in collaboration with seven institutions, and more than 20 sub-events and activities took place.[6] A special interest was given to public community activities, such as workshops, hands-on sessions, demonstrations, informal talks, exhibits, and other activities, including several dedicated to children and youth.[3][7][1][8]

In the following year, throughout eight days of events series, the initiative took place in multiple places in Cairo, and Alexandria, in addition to Riyadh and Tripoli.[5] The event developed in later years until it was held in 2016 in more than 15 countries, and 40 institutions participated with various types of events.[9]

In 2014 and subsequent years, the event was celebrated in April to commemorate the creation of the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts on 4 April 1946, after a proposal by the founder of the day, Mahmoud Zaki.[10][1] The day was officially accredited by the ALECSO during the Arab Ministers of Culture meeting in December 2016.[9]

Day’s Slogans and themes

The Institute announces a slogan or a theme for the Day every year, which reflects the importance of Arabic manuscripts and their texts in a particular topic.[11]

Accompanying Events

Other occasional celebrations and means of appreciation take place within the Day as well.[9][15]
