Arash Reisinezhad (born 1984) is an Iranian researcher, analyst, and university professor. He is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Middle East Centre of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Department of Government at Harvard University.[1][2]
Reisinezhad was previously a faculty member in International Relations at the University of Tehran. His research and teaching interests include Iranian affairs, international relations, and geopolitics. As a political science scholar, he maintains a significant presence in the media and on social networks, providing analysis on topics related to Iran. He is widely recognized for his media contributions as an expert in geopolitics and foreign relations.[3][4][5]
In March 2023, media reports emerged regarding his suspension from his position as Assistant Professor at the University of Tehran, which sparked reactions from students and the press. The Recruitment Board of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology officially opposed his continued cooperation with the Department of International Relations in a letter to the university.[6]
Life and Education
Reisinezhad was born in 1984. In 2002, he was admitted to Sharif University of Technology to study Chemical Engineering, graduating in 2007. During his undergraduate years, he served as the Secretary of the Islamic Students' Association at Sharif University. In 2007, he moved to the University of Tehran to pursue a Master's degree in Political Science. Following this, he attended Florida International University, where he earned both a Master's and a PhD in International Relations, graduating in 2017.[7]
He returned to Iran in 2019 and began teaching as an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the University of Tehran. For a period, he served as the Vice-Chair of the Department of International Relations under the chairmanship of Nasser Hadian-Jazy.[8]
Works
Arash Reisinezhad has published two books and numerous articles in the fields of geopolitics, international relations, and Iranian studies in both Persian and English.[9] [10]
His books include:
- The Shah of Iran, the Iraqi Kurds and the Lebanese Shia, published in English by Palgrave Macmillan in 2018.[11] This book has since been translated into Persian and Kurdish languages.[12]
- Iran and the New Silk Road (ایران و راه ابریشم نوین), published by the University of Tehran Press in 2021.[13][14]
Controversies
In 2019, following his appointment as a professor at the University of Tehran, the Kayhan Newspaper published an article attacking his recruitment. The paper questioned his qualifications, citing his education at a U.S. university (Florida) as a reason for his alleged unsuitability to teach at the institution.[15][16]
In February 2023, media outlets reported his suspension from the University of Tehran.[17] This move faced significant backlash from students and media organizations.[18] Several sources linked his dismissal to his support for students during the 2022–2023 Iranian protests.[19][20]
