Arayes (arabic: عرايس) is a popular Levantine dish, that is widespread in Syria, Lebanon and also in Palestine and Jordan. And it is part of the Levantine cuisine and the broader Arab cuisine.
The meal is made up of Arabic bread (pita) that is stuffed with minced meat and smeared with olive oil.
The dish is considered easy to prepare, and its ingredients are relatively common and can be found relatively easily throughout the Middle East, which contributes to the dish's popularity in the Levant, especially in Syria, Lebanon, and others. There are also local versions of this dish in Iraq and Egypt.
Name
The word 'Arayes' is a plural version of 'Aros' (عروس), which means 'bride' in Arabic. The name originates from Arab countries and certain tribes in them where they used to serve this dish in honor of newlyweds.[1]
Ingredients
The two main ingredients to this dish are minced meat and Arabic bread, however several other ingredients are also added to the dish at various stages of preparation such as, onions, peppers, tomatoes, garlic and spices. It's also possible to replace minced beef with chopped chicken.
