From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Archie “Bald Head” Mitchell is an American musician, record producer, and audio engineer from Memphis, Tennessee. He is known for his work in soul, R&B, and Southern hip hop, contributing to projects by artists such as Al Green, Pretty Tony, Playa Fly, and Gangsta Blac. Mitchell is part of the musical family associated with Royal Studios and Hi Records, long directed by his grandfather, the producer and arranger Willie Mitchell.

Early life and family

Mitchell was raised in Memphis and adopted at age five by his grandfather, Willie Mitchell, Vice President of Hi Records and longtime operator of Royal Studios.[1][2] Through his grandfather’s work, Mitchell was exposed early to the Memphis soul tradition shaped by artists including Al Green, Ann Peebles, the Hi Rhythm Section, and others recorded at Royal.

Mitchell attended Christian Brothers High School, where he played on the varsity basketball team.[3] He became increasingly involved in studio work during his teenage years, assisting engineers and musicians at Royal Studios on evenings and weekends.[1]

Career

Mitchell began working in the recording studio during childhood, often accompanying his grandfather during sessions.[1] This early access allowed him to observe and learn from numerous visiting artists and industry figures, including George Clinton, David Gest, and international performers who recorded at Royal.

In 1989, Mitchell formed the rap group M-Team, one of the early Memphis hip hop acts to receive significant radio airplay.[4] The group released the single “Rolling Samurai,” followed by the album For Deposit Only (1991), on which Mitchell contributed engineering and programming.[5]

Mitchell has performed on and engineered a wide range of recordings across genres. He played drums on Al Green’s “You’re Everything to Me” (1989), percussion on Billy Always’s Let’s Get Personal (1990), and congas on Solomon Burke’s Nothing’s Impossible (2010).  He later co-produced Green’s albums I Can’t Stop (2003) and Everything’s OK (2005) with Willie Mitchell.[6]

In 2008, Mitchell co-founded the independent label Renegade South Entertainment with Michael Raiford, focusing on regional hip hop and R&B artists.[1]

As a studio engineer, Mitchell has worked on sessions for numerous artists, including Billy Always, Julius Bradley, Solomon Burke, Alex Chilton, Buddy Guy, Hurricane Chris, John Mayer, My Morning Jacket, and Lynn White.

Legacy

Mitchell is part of the multigenerational lineage connected to Royal Studios, one of the longest-running continuously operated recording studios in the United States. He continues to contribute to Memphis’s musical landscape as an engineer, producer, and musician.
