Are Blytt (born 1981) is a Norwegian painter[1] who is noted for his distinct approach to painting and photography.[2]
Works
Blytt's oeuvre is often linked to a new approach towards abstract painterly ideas, a subject matter for which his generation of painters is known. These painters’ works also contain conversations about how painting can progress in the digital era. The interconnection between painting, photography, and text is essential in Blytt's paintings, shown by implementing self-written texts and photos into the abstract canvases.[3][4][5] The works are inspired by previous art historical precedents such as abstract expressionism and minimalism, with a subversive sense or a contemporary approach. Blytt's works have also been described as "post-painterly figuration", meaning they contain representational and figurative matter, and are full of references to a human culture in flux.[6] In 2012, Blytt was an artist-in-residence at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo and at Wiels Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels in 2018. In 2019 Blytt did his first fashion collaboration, Are Blytt x Avenue, presented at Oslo Runway 2019.[7][8]
