Ariel Abadilla

Ariel Y. Abadilla is a Filipino lawyer and a retired career diplomat. He was the first and last resident ambassador of the Philippines to Ireland from 2009 to 2012.

Career[edit]

On 30 May 2009 President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo swore in Ariel Abadilla, as the Philippine's first full-time resident ambassador to Ireland taking over diplomatic jurisdiction from the Philippine Embassy in London. The swearing in took place at the VIP Lounge of the NAIA International Passenger Terminal 3, shortly before the President departed for a visit to Korea. Abadilla is a career service officer and passed the Foreign Service exams in 1978. Since 1994 he has held postings in New York City, Houston, Seattle, Beijing, Sydney, Washington D.C. and Hawaii. In line with his retirement in 2012, the closure of the Philippine Embassy in Dublin resulted to the Philippine Embassy in London re-assuming diplomatic jurisdiction over the Ireland and the reopening of a Philippine Honorary Consulate in Dublin.

At the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila, he held director positions for Treaties Division, Passport division and deputy chief of protocol and later chief of protocol. A member of the Philippine Bar, Abadilla took his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Bachelor of Laws degrees at the Ateneo de Manila University. He is also an alumnus of the Academy of American and International Law in Dallas, Texas. He also took seminar courses in the International Peace Academy in Vienna, Austria.[1]

He has two daughters, Katharine and Marienette, son Alvin, and wife Nerissa.
